Location: Newton Country Day School, 785 Centre St. Newton, MA
Schedule: Full-time leave coverage
Salary: one-semester appointment of $30,000 – $50,000, depending on education and experience
Duration: August 2026 through January 2027, leave coverage
Position Overview
Newton Country Day School is seeking a dedicated and engaging Upper School Learning Specialist to support students in grades 9–12 through individualized and small-group instruction. The learning specialist will focus on strengthening executive functioning skills, core academic abilities, and effective test-taking strategies to help students build confidence and achieve academic success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one and small-group academic support tailored to individual student needs
- Support students in developing executive functioning skills, including:
- Organization and time management
- Task initiation and completion
- Study planning and prioritization
- Goal setting and accountability
- Teach and model effective academic skills such as study techniques, active reading, and note-taking skills
- Develop and implement test preparation plans, including instruction in:
- Test-taking strategies
- Approaches to managing test anxiety
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and/or program staff regarding student growth and goals
- Maintain accurate session notes and progress documentation
- Collaborate with teachers, advisors, and administration to support student success
- Engage in the life of the school through participating in community time (assemblies, weekly chapel services)
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in education, special education, psychology, or a related field preferred
- Experience working with high school students
- Commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning approaches
- Strong understanding of executive functioning and study skills development
- Ability to break down complex academic concepts into clear, manageable steps
- Patient, encouraging, and student-centered approach to academic support
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Experience supporting students with learning differences (preferred but not required)
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Works at a desk and a computer screen for extended periods of time.
- Newton Country Day’s campus consists of multiple buildings and outdoor spaces connected by external walkways and stairs.
- This position requires taking prospective families on full campus tours in all weather conditions.
- Attends school fairs, school visits and other events off site.
