Summary Description:

BB&N is seeking a full-time Associate Director of Athletics (6-8). The Primary responsibilities include fulfilling the mission of BB&N’s MS (6-8) Athletic Program, managing a team of coaches, and coaching a Varsity sport. The Associate Athletic Director (AD) position works the duration of the academic year and is responsible for assisting the Director of Athletics in all aspects of leading our vibrant, expansive, and inclusive athletic and wellness programs. The Associate AD is typically assigned to two seasons of coaching responsibilities, including as a Head Varsity Coach in one. The exact coaching responsibilities will be dependent on the qualifications and the background of the chosen candidate. In conjunction with the Director of Athletics, the Associate AD will help effectively supervise and evaluate all MS (6-8) athletic coaches and ensure coaches are provided with appropriate professional development opportunities. The Associate AD will be the department liaison for the Lower School (6th Grade) and Middle School (7th & 8th) Directors, working directly with colleagues in those areas to support the MS (6-8) Athletic Program. This position provides athletic representation at the Middle and Lower School faculty, department, and committee meetings, and serves as a point person for family, student, and advisor concerns. The Associate AD is expected to make contributions to the overall team effort in the Athletic Department, including assistance with various duties and functions when needed, including, but not limited to, site supervision, athletic comments, game day management, and managing the 6-8 waiver process.

Overview of the BB&N 6-8 Athletics Program:

The BB&N Middle School (6-8) Athletic program consists of students from the LS (6th Grade) and the MS (7th & 8th Grades). In a developmentally appropriate atmosphere and a safety-first environment, students learn about leadership, adversity, teamwork, and self-discipline through participation and competition. We emphasize skill development, sportsmanship, and character development, and believe that our educators best facilitate this by creating a positive and encouraging environment where our students can learn about themselves, their peers, and develop life skills.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

Key functions for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Athletic Director to define MS (6-8) athletic options and program policies.

  • Coordinate with LS and MS Administrators to create the yearly school calendar to plan 6-8 athletic game days and events.

  • Communicate MS (6-8) Athletic Program information to students, coaches, faculty, and families.

  • Represent the MS and Athletic Departments at (6-8) Athletic Program at Admissions Events and LS/MS/US Family Events.

  • Check in with 8th-grade students who participate in varsity-level athletic teams to help ensure they have a positive experience.

  • Remain current on changes in rules, coaching philosophies, techniques, and technology relevant to a particular sport or sports.

  • Represent BB&N at MS NEPSAC Meetings.

  • Support and work with LS and MS Administration on student behaviors and support the whole school community.

  • Fulfill key functions for the Athletic Department.

  • Advise and support transportation to contests and shuttles between LS/MS and US during the Athletics period.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements, Skills, and Competencies:

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of athletics administration and coaching experience, preferably in secondary independent schools. Bachelor’s degree required.

In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to coach a Varsity sport.

  • Knowledge of athletic administration and related regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a diverse group of people, including faculty, students, staff, and families.

  • Well organized with multi-tasking capability to manage multiple projects to the deadline.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and good listening skills.

  • Flexibility to work long hours, when necessary, including weekends and evenings during busy times, and some work during school holidays and summers.

  • Initiative and follow-through; “self-starter”.

  • Ability and desire to become involved in the life of the school.

  • Diplomacy, discretion, and tact.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and support a busy director.

  • Professional boundaries; respect and use of appropriate information channels.
