Position: Assistant Girls’ Rowing Coach

Location: Newton Country Day School (Boathouse is on the Charles River, just upstream of CRI, on Nonantum Rd, Newton, MA 02458)
Season: Fall 2026 (August 24-November 6), and potentially beyond
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday (4:00–6:00 PM); Wednesday, Friday (3:00–5:00 PM)/ Some weekends for practices and races
Compensation: Range $4,000-7,000, commensurate with experience

Position Summary

Newton Country Day School seeks a passionate and dedicated Assistant Varsity Girls Rowing Coach to support the varsity rowing program during the spring season. The assistant coach will work alongside the Head Coach to develop skilled, confident, and resilient student-athletes while fostering a positive, competitive, and mission-driven team culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach in planning and leading all varsity practices, training sessions, and regattas, with an emphasis on technical skill development, teamwork, and competitive excellence.
  • Support the physical, technical, and personal development of student-athletes of varying experience levels, fostering courage, confidence, discipline, and resilience.
  • Reinforce proper rowing technique, boat handling, race strategy, and safety protocols on and off the water.
  • Help supervise equipment, including shells, launches, oars, and other rowing equipment, ensuring safe and appropriate use.
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, the Head Coach, and the Athletics Department.
  • Willingness and ability to drive school vehicles and/or trailers, if needed, for practices, regattas, and team transportation.
  • Uphold and model the values of Sacred Heart education and the mission of Falcon Athletics, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all student-athletes.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Director of Athletics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous rowing experience as a coach and/or competitive rower; collegiate rowing experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of rowing technique, training principles, racing strategy, and water safety.
  • Ability to positively motivate and mentor high school student-athletes while promoting a culture of accountability, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
  • Current CPR/First Aid and SafeSport certifications (or willingness to complete prior to the season).
  • CORI background check and fingerprinting required.
  • Massachusetts State Boating License (or willingness to complete prior to the season).
