Job Description
Position: Head Varsity Field Hockey Coach
Location: Newton Country Day School, Newton, MA
Schedule: Fall 2026: Mid-August through early November, including preseason preparation and potential postseason play. Practices are held Monday through Friday afternoons, with occasional weekend tournaments or events.
Stipend: $7,000–$9,500, commensurate with experience
Position Summary
Newton Country Day School seeks a dynamic and experienced Head Varsity Field Hockey to lead one of the school’s premier athletic programs. With a strong tradition of competitive success and a deep commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes, the Falcons Field Hockey program is well positioned for continued excellence and growth.
The ideal candidate will bring high-level coaching experience (collegiate or equivalent), a demonstrated passion for leading girls’ volleyball, and a commitment to building a positive, competitive, and values-driven program. This individual will serve as the face of the varsity field hockey program and will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including coaching, player development, program leadership, and collaboration within a mission-aligned school community.
Position Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of Varsity Field Hockey practices, games, and postseason play, including planning, preparation, and in-game management.
- Design and implement a comprehensive player development model emphasizing technical skill, tactical understanding, physical preparation, leadership, and character.
- Foster a competitive, inclusive, and values-driven team culture aligned with Sacred Heart education and Falcon Athletics.
- Embody the Athletics Department core principles of fielding programs that are fierce, formative, and fun while developing women of courage and confidence.
- Serve as the primary ambassador for the program, building strong relationships with youth, club, prep, and collegiate field hockey communities.
- Create and support innovative programming opportunities including clinics, camps, partnerships, and community engagement initiatives.
- Provide individualized feedback, mentorship, and guidance to support student-athlete growth and college placement aspirations.
- Collaborate with Middle School coaches to ensure a vertically aligned and sustainable program pipeline.
- Demonstrate passion for and experience developing girls’ and women’s sport.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with student-athletes, families, faculty, and Athletics Department leadership.
- Ensure athlete safety, wellness, and adherence to best practices in physical and emotional care, as well as league and school policies.
Qualifications
- Prior coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level is required; head coaching experience is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, school-based athletics environment with shared goals and accountability.
- Deep knowledge of field hockey tactics, training methods, and competitive strategy.
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Commitment to the mission and values of Newton Country Day School and the Sacred Heart Network.
