Job Description:

Mother Caroline Academy (MCA) seeks a driven, well-qualified Humanities Middle School Teacher to join its robust faculty and staff.

About Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center:

Mother Caroline Academy is a tuition-free, independent school for girls in grades 3-8 from Boston’s underserved neighborhoods. Serving girls of all faiths, races, and cultures, the school provides a high-quality education that nurtures each student’s unique gifts and prepares her for success in competitive secondary schools and college. Rooted in Catholic tradition, MCA emphasizes scholarship, leadership, social, and moral development. The Academy supports its graduates through secondary and college education, with a 100% high school graduation rate and 96% college enrollment rate.

In addition to its academic focus, MCA offers educational programs for families, helping to ensure a supportive community. With a 7:1 student-to-teacher ratio and extended school days, Mother Caroline Academy provides a holistic education fostering academic skills, resilience, and character. Our Students:

Mother Caroline Academy & Education Center serves 74+ girls in grades 3-8, who are 80% African American, 13% Hispanic, 7% mixed race. Essential Functions:

The Social Studies teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and conducting a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for school students in grades 3-8.

  • Develops and executes Social Studies curriculum by 1) identifying standards-aligned desired outcomes (focused on history, geography, politics, economics, culture and current events); 2) designing assessments and performance tasks that demonstrate learning; and 3) planning engaging, age-appropriate lessons that build toward those outcomes. Units should include opportunities to make cross-curricular connections with Social Studies content and, when appropriate, incorporate visual arts.
  • Supports English Language Arts instruction and collaborates closely with the English Language Arts teacher to intentionally align units of study, essential questions, and instructional pacing, creating meaningful cross-curricular connections between literature, history, and current events. Support student success through co-teaching opportunities, targeted small-group writing instruction, and shared instructional practices that strengthen literacy skills across both content areas.
  • Design and implement writing instruction across various genres, integrating grammar and mechanics instruction purposefully within writing assignments and student feedback.
  • Apply effective differentiation strategies to support all learners, including English Language Learners and students with IEPs, using intervention strategies as needed.
  • Embed opportunities for critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity into all lesson and unit plans, including the purposeful use of technology and digital media.
  • Incorporate reading, writing, and historical or cultural context into every class session to promote deeper comprehension and engagement.
  • Maintain a strong classroom culture with clear expectations, consistent routines, and a high standard for student accountability in alignment with school policies and classroom norms. 

Skills and Experience:

  • Proven success teaching Social Studies in an urban school setting, with a demonstrated track record of improving student achievement and fostering a love of literature.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education or a related field preferred (or currently in progress).
  • Skilled in using data to drive instruction, including comfort with Microsoft Excel or other tools to analyze student performance and inform planning.
  • Experience with standards-based instruction and backward planning, especially for designing thematic, literature-based units.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and mission-driven school environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build meaningful relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Proficiency with digital tools such as Google Suite (Docs, Slides, Classroom), word processing, spreadsheets, and email communication.

MCA School Hours:

Daily 7:30 am-4:00 pm

Vacations and school closures generally follow Boston Public Schools.
