Robotics Coach

The Fenn School seeks candidates for a part-time Robotics Coach. Reporting to the Director of Innovation, the successful candidate will inspire curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving while coaching students through the engineering design process. This educator should be collaborative, organized, and enthusiastic about working with middle school boys, helping students develop both technical skills and the confidence to tackle complex challenges.

The position will start December 2nd and will end on March 5th. Typical hours are 3-5 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. We expect the team to participate in four to five weekend tournaments, which typically last an entire day.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead regular practices, teaching the fundamentals of mechanical design, engineering, and programming
  • Prepare teams for competitions (VEX/RECF)
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture that emphasizes the engineering design process and gracious professionalism
  • Manage equipment, materials, and the robotics workspace; track inventory and budget needs
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and school staff regarding schedules, progress, and events
  • Supervise students during practices, travel, and competitions, ensuring a safe environment at all times
  • Encourage iterative problem-solving, documentation, and reflection among team members

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of robotics platforms (VEX, or comparable) and familiarity with block-based and/or text-based programming (VEXcode or similar platforms)
  • Prior coaching or competition experience (FIRST, VEX, etc.)
  • Background in engineering, computer science, or a related field
  • Experience working with middle school–aged students preferred
  • Strong communication, organization, and mentorship skills
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to make technical concepts accessible and fun
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant technical/teaching experience preferred
  • Must clear a background check (CORI/SORI) per school policy

Compensation

The Robotics Teacher will be paid $40-$50 per hour
