Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Summary Moses Brown School seeks a versatile and experienced Counselor to nurture the mental health and well-being of students across the Middle and Upper School divisions. This role requires a clinician capable of supporting the full developmental journey of adolescence—from the transition into 5th grade through graduation. The Counselor provides intentional and direct intervention, integrates social-emotional learning into the curriculum, and collaborates with families and care teams to help students navigate challenges and build resilience.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Clinical Support & Counseling
  • Provide individual and small-group support for students facing academic stress, social challenges, mental health needs, and personal concerns.
  • Focus on emotional identification, regulation, and helping students develop tools to navigate peer relationships and strengthen their sense of self.
  • Conduct clinical assessments and manage crisis interventions, serving as the lead communicator with parents and outside healthcare providers to ensure a coordinated circle of care.
  • Facilitate spaces for students to explore their identities and develop the confidence necessary for independence.
  1. Wellness Education & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • Design and deliver age-appropriate wellness curricula and SEL lessons focused on self-awareness, coping strategies, and self-advocacy.
  • Teach progressive skills including mindfulness, stress management, conflict resolution, and perspective-taking.
  • Coordinate division-wide mental health programming, such as depression screenings and suicide prevention education.
  • Partner with the Director of Health and Wellness to provide resources and educational sessions for parents, guardians, and faculty/staff.
  1. Collaboration & Systems of Support
  • Serve as a core member of divisional Student Support Teams, collaborating regularly with Division Heads, Deans, Learning Specialists, Nursing, Athletics, and College Counseling.
  • Consult with faculty and advisors to support emotional well-being within the classroom, on the fields, and on the stage.
  • Work with colleagues to support student transitions (e.g., 4th to 5th grade or 8th to 9th grade) through proactive programming and continuity of care.
  • Support various campus groups, including the Diversity Committee and student-led wellness initiatives.
  1. Professional Engagement
  • Offer professional development to colleagues on student support, mental health, trauma-informed care, and educator self-care.
  • Maintain confidential records and contribute to a community of openness and shared responsibility for student well-being.
  • Center Quaker values and inclusive decision-making processes in all aspects of clinical and educational practice.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., School Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology).
  • Licensure: Evidence of license or certification (e.g., LMHC, LICSW, LCSW, or School Counseling) or evidence of pursuit of professional credentials.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of experience working with students in a school setting is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively across the developmental spectrum of grades 5 through 12 with a strong focus on early adolescence.
  • Skills: Strong clinical assessment and intervention skills; experience in curriculum design and classroom instruction; and the ability to advocate for students and families across a diversity of backgrounds.

Compensation & Schedule This is a 10-month (school year) exempt position. Moses Brown School offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.
