DIRECTOR of COMMUNITY and BELONGING
The Director of Community and Belonging (DCB) works to support the vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging (DEIJB) among constituencies at Newton Country Day School. The DCB works at an Administrative level with Division Heads, Mission and Ministry Team, and Admissions Office to ensure that all members of our community feel connected to the School, its mission, and culture in a tangible and positive way. The DCB reports to the Assistant Head of School and works closely with the Senior Leadership Team. The DCB will develop and execute programming for the Newton Country Day School community, as follows:
Students:
- Responsible for program development, student training, and student leadership for students in both middle and upper school (grades 5-12).
- Provide support and resources to Affinity Group programming, P.R.I.S.M. Student Council, speaker series, and monthly heritage assemblies.
Faculty/Staff:
- Partners with the Mission and Ministry Team to support student programming that builds a sense of community and belonging.
Parents/Caregivers:
- Welcome and foster participation in the Bridges group for Parents of Color and Allies and the Parents Association.
Professional Development:
- Organize professional development events related to DEIJB initiatives.
- Collaborate with academic and administrative teams to integrate principles into curricula, policies, and school culture.
Protocols:
- Collaborate with the administration on reporting systems and mission-rooted responses to incidents of bias.
Admission:
- Assist in the recruitment of prospective families across the racial, religious, and socioeconomic spectrum.
Community Partnerships:
- Act as a liaison between the School and external communities.
- Forge partnerships with community organizations to enhance educational opportunities and foster belonging.
Alumnae:
- Collaborate with the Director of Alumnae Relations to foster relationships with the Alumnae of Color network.
Hiring:
- Work with Senior Leadership to support strategic recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff of diverse backgrounds.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- 3+ years experience in a role focused on DEIJB initiatives, preferably within an educational setting.
- Demonstrated success in developing and implementing initiatives that promote DEIJB.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to inspire and mobilize individuals toward common goals.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, capability of building relationships with a wide range of individuals and groups.
- Ability to navigate sensitive situations with empathy, discretion, and integrity.
- Passion for mission-oriented work.
- High EQ and proficiency in dealing with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to build consensus and bring people together.
- Ability to work individually and collaboratively.
- Affinity for systems and streamlining processes.
- Proficiency with Google Suite (including Google Classroom).
