Job Summary
Our summer Beacon Prep program provides rising 8th graders who are close to being admissible to Beacon Academy with targeted academic enrichment, leadership development, and opportunities to build confidence and community.
The Beacon Prep Summer Instructor & Program Lead is responsible for designing and delivering a 4-week summer curriculum, guiding students through daily activities in STEM, leadership, communication, advocacy, and teamwork. This position is also responsible for managing daily schedules for volunteers and interns.
Planning for this role will take place during the month of June. Programming runs Monday through Thursday from July 7 to July 30. The program lead must be available from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM on days the program is in session.
Reports to: Director of Operations & Chief of Staff
Schedule:
- June and August: Monday – Thursday, flexible between 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM;
- July: Monday – Thursday, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
Position Type: Seasonal: June 1 – August 6, 2026
Benefits Eligible: No
Seasonal Stipend: $7000 – $9000, depending on experience
Primary Responsibilities
- Curriculum Design & Instruction
- Design and lead a 4-week curriculum (STEM + Leadership + Communication + Advocacy)
- Facilitate daily morning and afternoon sessions, including activities based around communication, public speaking, identity exploration, and leadership
- Adapt materials to meet varied student learning styles
- Classroom management
- Create a welcoming classroom culture
- Model Beacon’s values: persistence, teamwork, problem-solving, community
- Support students and families in understanding expectations for Beacon Academy
- Track student attendance and progress
- Relationship building and frequent communication with students and families
- Manage and coach volunteers and alumni assistants
- Participate in debriefs and meetings with Beacon Academy staff regarding student progress
- Provide ongoing feedback on student growth
Qualifications
Required:
- Availability for the complete duration of the program
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and culturally responsive practice
- Experience working with middle school students
- Strong communication skills
- Experience with classroom management and large group youth supervision
- Ability to design engaging lessons both indoors and outdoors
- Experience managing and supporting interns and volunteers of all ages
- Collaborative mindset and flexibility
Preferred:
- Background in education, STEM, youth development, or creative arts
- Experience with project-based learning
- Familiarity and alignment with Beacon Academy’s mission
- Proficiency with Google Workspace
Physical Demands
- This position works on site in our school office environment at both Beacon Academy and The Roxbury Latin School.
- This position requires the ability to work using a computer for long periods of time.
- This position must have the ability to lift up to 5-10 lbs.
