AISNE Insight | Changes in F-1 & J-1 Visas: What You Need to Know

virtual

Effective September 15, a new Department of Homeland Security rule eliminates “duration of status” for academic students (F) and exchange visitors (J). This rule change has significant impact to independent schools with students holding F-1 and J-1 visas.

Come learn what this may mean for your school’s international students in the 2026-2027 school year, and beyond. We will be joined by Brian Garrett and Shiva Karimi, Chair of the Education and Immigration Law Practices, respectively, at McLane Middleton. Brian and Shiva will cover changes to departure grace periods, changes to EOS applications, what the four-year fixed period cap means for students with existing visas, and what you can do to prepare now while the rule is under congressional review.

We will discuss which areas of employment and student status should undergo immediate review, as well as what options international students may or may not have going forward. There will be time for your questions.

We recommend all Heads of School with international students and staff attend, as well as your human resources and international student support leads.

Thank you to McLane Middleton for making this AISNE Insight possible.
