Session 1: Strengthening Affinity Group Practice: Frameworks for Belonging, Community, and Impact, 9 am – 12 pm

Many organizations utilize affinity groups to support members of the community, to increase sense of belonging for members of historically marginalized groups, and to improve overall inclusivity. And yet, many of us find ourselves facilitating these groups simply because we are one of the few in the community who identify as members of these groups or because we hold a desire to support DEI efforts. Facilitating identity affirming and protective spaces is simply not something we have been trained to do, and so many of us are hungry for this learning.

Learning Objectives

1. Learn a four-pillar framework for facilitating affinity groups that can leverage these spaces and build strong communities.
2. Discover factors that lead to greater (or less) success and examine our current programs for effectiveness.
3. Connect with other affinity leaders from other schools, within identity groups, to develop group-specific topics, resources, and strategies.

Session 2: Train the Trainer: Interrupting with Care and Facilitating Difficult Conversations, 1 – 4 pm

As leaders in DEI work, we are often asked to lead courageous conversations among peers and/or students. What are useful ways to interrupt oppressive comments, jokes, and behaviors without losing trust as facilitators and guides? What are best practices for creating brave spaces for authentic dialogue? Gain practical skills and discuss pitfalls in this capacity building workshop for leaders.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify barriers to courage that hinder authentic conversations and discuss how we might reduce them in our schools.
2. Learn practical strategies for interrupting with care – upholding accountability, learning from our mistakes, educating each other, repairing harm, and improving relationships.
3. Discover various principles and frameworks for facilitating meaningful conversations across difference in an increasingly polarized society.
