About the position:

Shady Hill School is seeking an enthusiastic, dependable, and engaging educator to join the Auxiliary Programs team as Afterschool Generalist Teacher. We are looking to fill two roles – one in Grades III-V and one in Grades VI-VIII. This part-time position is ideal for individuals interested in education, child development, recreation, or youth programming who enjoy building meaningful relationships with children in a joyful, play-based environment.

Afterschool Generalists are key members of the Auxiliary Programs team, creating safe, welcoming, and engaging afternoons for students in Beginners (Pre-K) through Grade VIII. Working collaboratively with colleagues, they supervise students, facilitate choice-based activities, support snack, homework, and dismissal routines, and foster a community where children build friendships, explore their interests, and develop increasing independence.

This role may also include opportunities for in-house substitute teaching during the school day, based on interest, qualifications, and school needs. Additional substitute hours are paid separately from the standard schedule.

This is an in-person, part-time, school-year position (August–June) with a standard 19.5 hours per week. The regular schedule is:

  • Monday: 2:45–5:45 pm
  • Tuesday: 2:45–5:45 pm
  • Wednesday: 11:45–5:45 pm (supports Kindergarten Extended Day prior to Afterschool)
  • Thursday: 1:15–5:45 pm (includes weekly Auxiliary Programs team meeting)
  • Friday: 2:45–5:45 pm

Occasionally, the schedule may vary to accommodate special school events or adjusted school-day schedules. Hourly employees are paid for all hours worked, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. Based on the scheduled hours, this position is not eligible for benefits other than paid holidays during the school year. The target start date for this position is August 26, 2026.

Primary Responsibilities:

Afterschool Program (Approximately 90% of the work week)

  • Take the lead in supervising, planning, and facilitating engaging Afterschool activities, play, and daily routines for Lower School students (Beginners–Grade V).
  • Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where students feel known, supported, and encouraged to explore their interests.
  • Organize and set-up Afterschool spaces and check-in with Afterschool colleagues during daily prep blocks (2:45-3:15 MTThF).
  • Plan, organize and collaborate to lead games, arts and crafts, outdoor play, and other choice-based activities.
  • Support students in resolving conflicts, building friendships, and developing age-appropriate independence.
  • Support students during transitions, snack, homework, and dismissal.
  • Monitor daily attendance and dismissal using SchoolPass.
  • Encourage independence, creativity, collaboration, and respectful community behavior.
  • Build positive relationships with students while supporting their social-emotional growth.

Community Support & School Life (Approximately 10% of the work week)

  • Collaborate with Auxiliary Programs colleagues, classroom teachers, and school staff to support student success.
  • Participate in weekly Auxiliary Programs team meetings.
  • Meet regularly with the Auxiliary Programs supervisor for coaching, support, and professional growth.
  • Maintain positive, professional communication with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Participate in the rotating “Late Stay” schedule, ensuring all remaining Afterschool students are safely dismissed to their families or authorized caregivers.
  • Model and uphold Shady Hill School’s values of kindness, curiosity, responsibility, and belonging.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Interest in education, child development, recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience working with children in schools, camps, childcare, or afterschool programs.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Comfort supervising outdoor activities in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail, etc.).
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and actively supervise young children.
  • Ability to navigate a multi-building campus in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, reach, lift, and stand for extended periods throughout the day.

Preferred

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, Recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience leading activities for elementary-aged children.
  • Understanding of developmentally appropriate supervision, positive behavior support, and progressive educational practices.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse, equitable, inclusive, and identity-affirming learning communities.

Additional Information

  • Must attend August orientation and all required safety and compliance trainings.
  • Opportunities for additional paid hours may be available through in-house substitute teaching during the school day, based on qualifications and school needs.
  • This is a school-year position with the potential for annual renewal.

The hourly rate for this position will be $22 – $25 per hour, depending on experience.
