Tilton School seeks a Director of Marketing & Communications to tell that story and develop an effective, engaging market position and core institutional message. In collaboration with the senior leadership team and Board of Trustees, the Director of Marketing & Communications will lead all of the school’s communication and marketing effort, helping to promote Tilton to external and internal audiences in support of our mission. This work will include development and execution of strategic plans to support enrollment marketing, fundraising efforts, media and community relations, social media marketing, creative assets, the school website, and more.
Reporting to: Head of School (or his designee)
Committee Memberships: Senior Leadership Team, Storytelling Team, Event Excellence Committee.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Head of School and key administrators to develop and execute integrated marketing strategies that position Tilton School as a leading small boarding school in New England.
- Establish a durable messaging framework that brings consistency and clarifies the school’s value proposition and differentiators.
- Bring a go-to-market mindset to all initiatives, identifying the channels, audiences, and stories that most effectively communicate the “product” to prospective families.
Digital Marketing, Analytics & Performance Optimization
- Lead the school’s digital marketing efforts, including SEO, paid search, paid social, retargeting, email marketing, and multi-channel campaign strategy.
- Leverage data insights from Google Analytics, Google Search Console, social platforms, and UTM tracking to optimize performance and guide decision-making.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and evolving family search behaviors; recommend tools and strategies that expand Tilton’s reach and competitiveness.
Content Strategy, Storytelling & Brand Management
- Develop and maintain consistent branding, messaging, and visual identity across all channels, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities.
- Oversee production of photography, videography, editorial storytelling, and design to support enrollment, advancement, and community communication needs.
- Serve as guardian of the institutional voice and style, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and professionalism across all internal and external communications.
- Ghostwrite for the Head of School and other administrators as needed.
Media, Publications & Digital Platforms
- Oversee the management of all digital platforms, including the Tilton School website and social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube).
- Create content strategies tailored to each platform that reflect audience behavior and enrollment objectives.
- Oversee major school publications, including the website, digital viewbook, advancement publications, magazines, newsletters, and video productions.
- Maintain strong relationships with vendors — digital marketing partners, designers, web developers, videographers, photographers — and assess performance and ROI.
- Serve on the school’s crisis management team, leading communication strategy and execution during urgent or sensitive situations.
Cross-Campus Partnership & Relationship Building
- Serve as a strategic partner to Admissions to drive enrollment, retention, and market visibility.
- Collaborate with the Advancement Office on comprehensive communications for fundraising initiatives, donor stewardship, and alumni engagement.
- Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders – including Admissions, Advancement, Athletics and Afternoon Programming, the Center for Academic Achievement, College Counseling, Academic Departments, and Community Life – to inform storytelling and strategy.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a small team of marketing and communications professionals and student contributors.
- Model a service-oriented culture grounded in collaboration, positivity, and continuous improvement.
- Manage the departmental budget and ensure efficient use of resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, digital media, journalism, or related field.
- Five or more years of senior-level marketing and communications experience, with a strong portfolio of managing and mentoring teams.
- Proven success building collaborative partnerships across departments and guiding cross-functional initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to create and implement messaging frameworks, marketing strategies, and process improvements.
- Hands-on expertise in digital marketing, SEO, content marketing, analytics platforms, and campaign optimization.
- Excellent writing, editing, storytelling, and presentation skills.
- Strong project management abilities with capacity to pivot and reprioritize in a dynamic environment.
- Experience in an independent school or mission-driven organization is preferred but not required.
