Dr. Marisa Franco | How to Find Belonging at Work
Belonging at work isn’t something that just happens—it’s something we create, together and with intention. Inspired by the research of psychologist Marisa Franco, this session invites you to take an active role in shaping connection and community in your professional life. We’ll explore practical, real-world strategies for initiating and deepening relationships, asking more meaningful questions, and sharing appreciation in ways that foster trust and authenticity. Together, we’ll move beyond the idea that connection is only about “clicking” instantly and instead embrace the understanding that belonging is built and strengthened over time. Through reflection and conversation, we’ll consider key behaviors that promote belonging—expressing vulnerability, showing appreciation, and taking the initiative. You’ll leave this session with renewed insight, language, and energy for cultivating authentic connection in your workplace and beyond.
Dr. Marisa Franco is a New York Times bestselling author, and TED speaker, Dr. Marisa G. Franco is known for digesting and communicating science in ways that resonate deeply enough with people to change their lives. Dr. Franco works as a professor at The University of Maryland and authored Platonic: How The Science of Attachment Can Help You Make – and Keep – Friends. She writes about friendship for Psychology Today and has been a featured connection expert for major publications like The New York Times, The Telegraph, and Vice. Dr. Franco speaks on belonging at corporations, government agencies, non-profits, and universities across the country, including Harper Collins Publishers, Cisco, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The Department of State.

Wanda Holland Greene | Notes and Words: Music and Poetry in Women’s Leadership
Step into a space where leadership meets artistry, reflection, and connection. In this inspiring session, we will explore how music and poetry can illuminate the truths, challenges, and joys of women’s leadership. Unlike traditional sessions that focus on tips, tools, and strategies, this experience engages the right brain—sparking creativity, renewal, and emotional resonance. It offers us the opportunity to pause, reflect, and integrate what you’ve learned, while connecting deeply with your peers through storytelling and shared expression. Leave not just informed, but transformed and invigorated by the power of art to sustain leadership, deepen community, and inspire the next steps in your journey. Please note that we request you bring a paper copy of a song or poem that reflects a truth, challenge, or joy related to women’s leadership.
Wanda Holland Greene is Head of School at The Hamlin School in San Francisco, where she leads a mission-driven community dedicated to innovation and best practices in the education of girls and young women. Thriving as an Outsider

Presented by: Naeemah Elias, Speaker & Founder | Elias Presence Ventures, LLC
Whether you’re the first, the only, or someone who has ever felt out of place, this session explores what it means to thrive as an outsider in environments not originally designed with women and nonbinary leaders in mind. Together, we’ll examine how cultural conditioning shapes confidence and belonging, unpack internalized barriers, and explore strategies for building influence and visibility while staying true to your values. We will reflect on our lived experiences, identify leadership behaviors often reserved for insiders, and leave with practical strategies to amplify your own voice, champion emerging leaders, and cultivate a renewed sense of agency to lead with authenticity within your school and community.
Time Management for Busy Educators and Administrators

Presented by: Dr. Sadie Elisseou, Physician | www.sadie-elisseou.com
This workshop provides practical strategies for managing time and workload in high-demand educational settings. Dr. Sadie Elisseou draws on evidence-based productivity concepts and real-world experience to help you reduce cognitive overload, set priorities, and achieve personal and professional goals. We will explore common barriers to effective time management, unpack myths about productivity, and review actionable strategies across more than ten domains. The session emphasizes interactive learning, allowing you to share challenges and solutions while developing tailored approaches to optimize efficiency and wellbeing.
The Science of the “No-Compromise” Leader: A Blueprint for Performance and Fulfillment

Presented by: Dr. Shideh Shafie, Physician & Performance Coach | www.shidehshafie.com
Independent school leadership often feels like a constant state of triage. We have the degrees, the drive, and the tools, yet the gap between our professional output and our personal fulfillment can quietly widen over time. In this session, Dr. Shideh Shafie bridges modern stress science with executive leadership strategy. This is not about “working harder.” It’s about understanding the neurobiology of performance and how your nervous system directly shapes your focus, decision-making, and capacity. Shideh will guide you through a strategic audit of your leadership style, helping you identify the biological stress patterns that lead to burnout and providing an operational framework to pursue your goals without compromising your standards or your life beyond the role. Move beyond busy work and into a high-impact strategy that protects your excellence and restores your sense of fulfillment.
Preparing Myself for Leadership: Practical Pathways for Women in Independent Schools

This interactive session offers practical guidance for women at the start of their leadership journeys. Together we will explore how to identify personal values, highlight personal and professional strengths, and articulate a leadership philosophy. The session also will include an honest look at holistic leadership, giving space for you to think about your career trajectory within the context of health and wellbeing, emotional resilience, and purpose. You will leave with concrete strategies to position yourself for future leadership roles.

A buffet-style lunch offering space for reflection and conversation.
2:00 – 3:00 PM | Topic Sessions 2

And Introducing: YOU

Presented by: Naeemah Elias, Speaker & Founder | Elias Presence Ventures
Clear, confident communication is essential for leaders at every stage of their careers. Whether you are presenting to colleagues, leading difficult conversations, or stepping into moments that call for visibility, the way you use your voice and presence can shape how others experience your leadership. And Introducing: YOU is a high-energy, interactive workshop focused on showing up with confidence, clarity, and authenticity. We will explore practical tools for preparation, vocal strength, body language, and what Naeemah calls the “costume of confidence.” Through guided practice, partner conversations, and real-time skill building, you will learn to communicate with greater impact and ease, no matter the room or audience.
Trauma-Informed Educational Leadership

Presented by: Dr. Sadie Elisseou, Physician | www.sadie-elisseou.com
Dr. Sadie Elisseou, a nationally recognized trauma-informed care expert and Harvard Medical School faculty member, applies trauma-informed principles to the realities of educational leadership. Together we will examine how stress, burnout, trauma, and organizational change shape school communities and influence student and adult behavior. You will learn how trauma-informed frameworks strengthen communication, support retention and engagement, and create environments where both students and educators can thrive. The session provides a structured approach for responding to difficult events, supporting individuals labeled as “difficult,” and communicating with empathy during periods of strain. It also emphasizes the neurobiology of stress, practical strategies for embedding trauma-informed leadership across teams, and the role of these practices in advancing workplace equity and wellbeing.
Still I Rise: Advancing To Senior Leadership and Headship

Presented by: Wanda Holland Greene, Head of School | The Hamlin School (San Francisco, CA)
Designed for women currently serving in leadership roles in independent schools, this session focuses on the “ascent” to senior leadership and headship. Through guided reflection, journaling, and candid conversation, we will explore what the rise to a higher position looks like both professionally and personally. Wanda will share tools to help you navigate the complex realities of ambition, preparation, family life, and gendered expectations in school leadership. Leave (and lead!) with a clearer sense of purpose, readiness, and agency as you position yourself for senior leadership or headship.
Asking for What You Need: Negotiating with Confidence

Presented by: Rebecca Malotke-Meslin, Leadership Coach | Pleasantly Aggressive
Have you ever considered asking for more resources or a change in responsibilities, then quickly talked yourself out of it? What held you back? Effectively advocating and negotiating could have a lasting impact on achieving your goals and improving your school’s sustainability. And yet, fear of rejection, lack of a clear strategy, and undervaluing your own needs will have you backing down before you can even ask. In this session, we’ll reflect on the barriers preventing you from making your ask, draft a compelling argument, and learn the basics of effective negotiation.

Redefining the Summit: Headship Isn’t the Only Measure of Leadership Success

Presented by: Clair Ward, Dean of Enrollment | Northfield Mount Hermon School (Mount Hermon, MA)
Though headship is often regarded as the profession’s highest post, it’s not the destination that many leaders choose (by intention) for their careers. A leadership journey that makes meaningful impact and brings fulfillment can take many forms, from leading a division, department, or institutional initiative, to driving change in advancement, academic programming, or school operations. This engaging panel conversation will explore the many paths of educational leadership. Panelists representing a range of roles will share their personal career stories, the decisions, challenges, and turning points that shaped their trajectories, and how they came to recognize the roles that best aligned with their skills, passions, and purpose. Together, they’ll invite you to consider how leadership can be defined by influence, collaboration, and contribution not only by title.

Writing Your Own Story: Owning Your Ambitions and Navigating Your Career Path

Presented by: Heather Flewelling, Chief Talent Officer and Allison Gaines Pell, Senior Consultant | Carney Sandoe & Associates
Women leaders in independent schools bring tremendous talent and ambition to their work, yet their career journeys often include challenges such as bias, discrimination, and invisible barriers. Through reflections, exercises, and guidance from both the candidate and search consultant perspective, we will explore opportunities for advancement, identify areas of influence, and align your goals with the next steps in your leadership path.
Building Healthy Partnerships Through Contract and Compensation Negotiations

Presented by: Sara Goldsmith Schwartz, Founder and President | Schwartz Hannum PC
Negotiating contracts and compensation in schools can be complex, especially for women leaders. In this interactive session, Sara Schwartz, an experienced education and employment lawyer who represents both schools and Heads of School, will guide you through a collaborative approach to employment contract negotiations. Drawing on legal expertise and real-world scenarios, this session focuses on creating healthy partnerships between schools and leaders, helping women on both sides of the contract process advocate effectively while fostering mutual respect and understanding. This session combines legal insights with practical negotiation strategies, helping to equip you with the tools to negotiate fair compensation and contracts while maintaining strong, professional partnerships.
Tooting Your Own Horn: The Art of Self-Promotion

Presented by: Rebecca Malotke-Meslin, Leadership Coach | Pleasantly Aggressive
Leading with confidence requires the ability to articulate your strengths, talents, and accomplishments—whether in a staff meeting, annual review, or job interview. Yet many leaders find self-promotion uncomfortable or challenging. This session examines why that resistance is so common, introduces mindset shifts that reframe self-promotion as leadership, and offers practical strategies for tracking and communicating your work effectively. Together we will explore what holds us back from self-promotion, gain reassurance that these challenges are shared by many, and leave with a new perspective on owning your impact. The session provides a practical tool for tracking accomplishments and concrete language to help you communicate your contributions with clarity and confidence across a variety of professional contexts.
In the Thick of It: Perimenopause, Stress, and Sustaining Yourself in School Leadership

Presented by: Dr. Amy Patel, Dean of Health and Wellness and Chief Medical Officer | Phillips Academy
Drawing on her work at the intersection of medicine, wellness, and school leadership, Amy explores how perimenopause, stress, and anxiety often converge during peak years of professional responsibility. This session centers the lived experiences of educators and administrators, offering research-informed insights, practical strategies, and emerging trends related to hormonal transitions, cognitive load, sleep, and emotional wellbeing. Grounded in compassion and clarity, the conversation normalizes experiences that are often under-discussed in school settings and equips you with tools to sustain your health, energy, and effectiveness as leaders.
