Woodworking Teacher – Family Leave Position

Dedham Country Day School (DCD) seeks a woodworking teacher to join the robust faculty in our Pre-Kindergarten to grade 8 community for a family leave position during the 2025-26 academic year. This full-time position is expected to run from September 2025 through December 2025.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach woodworking to students in grades PreK- 8, providing technical and conceptual knowledge
- Maintain the woodshop space including routine maintenance of machines and hand tools
- Present and create displays of student work; participate in arts assemblies
- Compose narrative comments and complete checklists for each student at the end of each term
- Communicate effectively (in person and in writing) with parents and community members
- Participate in Arts faculty meetings, divisional meetings and faculty/staff meetings as needed
- Provide weekly coverage for recess and lunch duties
Strong candidates will have:
- A bachelor’s degree (in woodworking, sculpture, or 3D art preferred), with experience as a woodworker/artisan and several years of related work experience
- A passion for the use of hand tools in crafting meaningful pieces
- A deep knowledge of safety practices on shop machinery (e.g. table saw, band saw, planer, jointer, drill press, disc sander and cordless power tools)
- Experience building an inclusive environment and an awareness of anti-bias teaching practices
- Knowledge of age-appropriate woodworking curriculum and pedagogy as well as child development, specifically the artistic development of children
- An understanding that DCD values the work ethic and creativity inherent in being an artist, and a willingness to be a representative of this value as both a teacher and practicing artist.
