Position Summary

The Principal of the Elementary School is a member of the leadership team and provides administrative and strategic oversight in developing, achieving, and maintaining the best educational programs and services for students, Kindergarten through Grade 6; responsible for the implementation and completion of short and long-term educational plans; responsible to lead the growth and development of educational services throughout the school; maintains close day-to-day supervision/interaction with teachers; combines strategic thinking and strong execution skills across all education content areas and works within the policies, regulations and objectives outlined by the Head of School; will ensure that effective education management practices are in place and used across all grade levels.

Primary Responsibilities

Staff Support and Oversight

  • Oversee and coordinate hiring
    • Review job descriptions
    • Coordinate posting of positions
    • Review applications, interview candidates and conduct reference checks
    • Bring top candidates to HOS for review
    • Inform community of appointment and notify finalists who do not receive an offer
    • Oversee onboarding of new faculty
  • Oversee and support teachers
  • Plan and coordinate monthly staff meetings, collaboration and professional development days with educational team
  • Meet with academic teams at least monthly
  • Oversee professional growth, development, evaluation and retention of teaching faculty
    • Solicit professional development with educational team
    • Ensure implementation and required training of curriculum
    • Manage annual professional development budget, including grant, and maintain record of professional development experiences
    • Conduct observations and complete yearly evaluations with support educational team

Program Oversight

  • Lead next school placement
    • Provide next school placement presentations for parents with administrative team
    • With administrative team, conduct individual next school placement meetings with parents and administrative team
    • With administrative team, coordinate student support with next school placement, including mock interviews
    • Write administrator recommendations and oversee teacher recommendations
      • Process for applications, ISEE, etc.
      • Individual meetings to discuss right fit
    • Support parents
      • Manage parent requests for teachers, consult teachers and educational support team regarding their recommendations, coordinate student classroom assignments
      • Manage and respond to parents concerns about teachers and program
      • Monitor student absences and manage student leaves
      • In consultation with teachers and educational support team (and HOS when needed) inform parents when concerns arise about a student’s behavior
    • Support students
      • Oversee and manage the implementation of each student’s academic program
      • Work with students when behavioral issues arise
      • With teachers and staff monitor student progress and proactively engage parents when concerns arrive
    • Develop, oversee and assess curriculum and program-based events such as Evening of the Arts, Grade 4/5 Adventure, Christmas & Spring Concerts, Sixth Grade Graduation, History and Science Fair, as well as support various admissions events
    • Manage scheduling and program decisions

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a supervisory/administrative capacity
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a classroom teacher
  • Reflective practitioner who demonstrates continued growth professionally
  • Experience using data and research to drive decision making
  • Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • Collaborative leadership style – committed to work collaboratively with administration, teachers, students, and parents
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Evening and weekend availability to support special events

Compensation

  • This is a full-time position
