Derby Academy, a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 coeducational day school located in Hingham, Massachusetts, seeks per-diem substitute teachers for all grades for the 2022-2023 school year.
Rooted in the School’s motto, “Improve Both Mind and Heart,” Derby provides students with a joyful and rigorous academic environment. Per-diem Substitute Teachers provide academic continuity and classroom stability in the event of a teacher’s absence. Duties include managing classroom behavior, quickly and effectively interpreting lesson plans, and writing reports to inform the students’ permanent teacher of their success. Ideal per-diem substitute teachers enjoy working with children of all ages, have prior teaching experience (of any age), demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in response to the needs of the school and students on a given day, work collaboratively with others, maintain professionalism and protect the confidentiality of students and faculty.

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree, an appreciation of early and middle childhood, a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, and interest in many content area(s) required.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- an appreciation of the developmental stages of PreK – Grade 8 students;
- prior teaching experience;
- enthusiasm, flexibility, and adaptability;
- basic understanding of positive classroom management strategies to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment;
- the ability to interpret and implement lesson plans and provide in-class and at home assignments based on the available lesson plan;
- proven ability to maintain student confidentiality;
- commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another;
- the ability to supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in common learning spaces, on the playground, and in the cafeteria;
- commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices;
- excellent communication skills to report to the permanent teacher and Division Head the successes and challenges of the day.
Pre-service training and CORI background check required prior to serving as a substitute teacher. Days, hours, grade level, and content area depend on the needs of the school and may be offered to substitute teachers in advance or on short notice. Pay is $130 per day (3.5 to 7 hours) and $65 per half-day (up to 3.5 hours).
