Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a part-time faculty member to join the Music Department to teach two sections of Theory 2 during the school year starting in mid-August 2024. This is a part-time position reporting to the Director of Music.

The Walnut Hill Music Department educates dedicated young musicians in a creative community that believes in the power of music as a force for good in the world. Our unique partnership with the New England Conservatory engages our students in a comprehensive music curriculum delivered at both schools. We value artistic excellence and prepare our graduates to thrive in a conservatory, university, or college setting. The five programs of the Music Department include Orchestral Instruments; Piano; Voice; Composition; and Jazz and Contemporary Musical Arts.

Responsibilities:

Teaching & Department Duties

  • Teach two sections of Theory 2. Each section meets for 50 minutes twice per week and the two sections are taught on the same two afternoons each week.

  • Class syllabus will be provided.

  • Foster a student-centered learning environment;

  • Utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning; and

  • Be prepared to teach both in person in the classroom and online if needed.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Participate in the School’s restorative practices; actively learn about and practice anti-racist work;

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive working and educational environment that supports the school’s mission, vision, and core values

  • Attend and participate in training and orientation programs, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training; and

  • Display willingness and ability to grow, learn, explore new approaches, and practice self-reflection.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Theory or Music Composition preferred; Master’s degree recommended;

  • Comfort with technology and willingness to adopt new technologies as needed; strong computer skills and proficiency in Google Suite required;

  • Innovative teaching practices and a focus on student-centered learning;

  • Strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills;

  • Cultural competence in working with diverse populations;

  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community and practicing anti-racist work;

  • Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles of Walnut Hill; and

  • Ability to balance a pursuit of academic, artistic, and institutional excellence with compassion for each individual.

Compensation: $12,000.00 (10 months)

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for tools, equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
