Lesley Ellis School Seeks a Full-Time
Middle School Grades 5 & 6 Math and Literature Group, and Grade 5 Homeroom Teacher

(Start date August 22, 2025)

Lesley Ellis School, an independent preschool through grade 8 institution, seeks experienced candidates with strong backgrounds in math and literacy instruction. Ideal applicants will demonstrate the ability to support students in developing a high level of interest and proficiency in mathematical and literacy skills, analytical thinking, and critical reasoning. Candidates must be capable of fostering and sustaining academic engagement and should bring both expertise and enthusiasm to their teaching practice. We are looking for individuals who value collaboration and are eager to work closely with colleagues to provide an enriching, engaging, and intellectually challenging educational experience.

Respecting and embracing differences has been at the core of a Lesley Ellis education since the school’s early days. Our anti-bias curriculum is rooted in a developmental model of learning that engages children’s innate desire to observe, question, consider, and eventually think deeply about complex interpersonal and societal issues. In 2005, we received the Leading Edge Award for Equity and Justice from the National Association of Independent Schools, and we continue to learn and work against systems of injustice, including racism, by practicing behavior that demonstrates appreciation for multiple perspectives and engaging in conversations and actions that confront bias at all developmental levels.

Responsibilities include:

●  Implement an innovative, creative, and challenging mathematics curriculum for middle school students in collaboration with the middle school mathematics team.

●  Design and run a literacy group that emphasizes reading comprehension, written expression, vocabulary development, and critical analysis and creates opportunities for students to engage meaningfully with a range of texts, genres, and authors that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.

●  Promote a love of reading and writing through thoughtful instruction, literature circles, writing workshops, and interdisciplinary projects.

●  Utilize a variety of assessment tools and strategies to monitor student progress and inform instruction in both math and literacy.

●  Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and styles of all students, ensuring access and challenge for every learner.

●  Plan anti-bias and current events curriculum and implement and oversee all organizational and general communication of the 5th grade homeroom, in collaboration with another member of the team.

●  Establish relationships with all students that are based on respect for individual learning styles, developmental stages, and temperaments.

●  Foster open communication, decision-making, and problem-solving channels between parents, faculty, and administration.

●  Write progress reports two times per year.

●  Serve as an advisor.

Qualifications:

●  Experience teaching math and literature required.

●  Independent school experience preferred.

●  M.A. or M.Ed. in upper elementary or middle school education preferred.
