
Lead Kindergarten Teacher
St. Michael’s Country Day School, Newport, RI
St. Michael’s Country Day School, an independent non-sectarian school serving students in
toddler through grade eight, is seeking a dedicated, enthusiastic Lead Kindergarten Teacher to
join our vibrant Lower Division. We are looking for a warm, passionate educator with a deep
understanding of Kindergarten-aged learners, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to
nurturing the whole child.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education (Master’s degree preferred).
Minimum of three years’ experience teaching Kindergarten in a classroom setting preferred.
Thorough understanding of Kindergarten developmental milestones and curriculum goals.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, parents, and colleagues.
Commitment to reflective teaching, ongoing professional development, and culturally responsive practices.
Familiarity with Fundations and Singapore Math preferred.
Familiarity with Responsive Classroom or similar approaches is a plus.
Responsibilities:
Curriculum & Instruction
Plan, implement, and adapt developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support Kindergarten students’ cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth.
Collaborate as part of a unified Kindergarten teaching team across three classrooms of 10-12 students each.
Balance individual teaching style with the shared responsibility of maintaining alignment, consistency, and clear communication across the Kindergarten program.
Deliver differentiated instruction, project-based learning, and integrated thematic curriculum.
Employ exceptional classroom management, organization, communication, and collaboration skills.
Administer curriculum mapping tools to document and align goals and outcomes.
Participate in shared duties such as lunch, recess, and dismissal.
Assessment & Student Support
Observe, assess, and document student’s development regularly to inform and guide instruction.
Conduct ongoing assessments and maintain records of student progress across domains.
Support a range of learning styles and needs through differentiated small-group and one-on-one instruction.
Family Engagement
Build strong, trusting relationships with families through clear, consistent, and proactive communication.
Conduct two formal parent-teacher conferences annually and provide written progress reports twice yearly.
Partner with families as needed to support student growth, transitions, and success.
Professional Engagement
Support the school’s mission and values, including its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Collaborate with colleagues and contribute actively to school-wide initiatives.
Activate a growth mindset and enthusiasm for ongoing learning and professional growth.
Participate in faculty meetings, school events, and professional development opportunities.
