The Advent School, located in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts, serves 200 pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students. A mission-focused school founded on the principles of social justice, Advent has served the students and families of Boston since 1961. Through its Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, Advent’s faculty delivers authentic, rigorous, and experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to “learn with passion, act with courage, and change the world.”

FIFTH/SIXTH GRADE CO-TEACHER:

The Advent School seeks a Fifth/Sixth Grade Co-teacher. Fifth/Sixth grade co-teachers are part of the Upper Grades program, which is designed specifically to promote collaborative problem-solving and student-directed project work and includes an advisory model rooted in principles of social justice for the support of social-emotional learning.

 Responsibilities & Duties

Teachers at The Advent School know their students well and use this knowledge to design and facilitate a student-centered curriculum that combines academic and social-emotional learning. The Advent School’s program promotes progressive, hands-on, project-based teaching that interweaves the arts, academic skills, and social justice themes. Teachers communicate regularly with families about the curriculum and partner with them regarding their child’s progress. 

Professional Development is the cornerstone of maintaining the highest standards of education at The Advent School. In that regard, each teacher is expected to engage in professional dialogue as a teacher/learner and researcher.

Required Skills & Characteristics

The ideal candidate will have strong pedagogical knowledge, as well as  knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach and previous experience co-teaching thematic or project-based units and differentiating instruction, in addition to being:

  • A lifelong learner who is resourceful, responsible, and collaborative
  • An enthusiastic, caring practitioner who believes that their students can change the world
  • A strong writer, comfortable communicating with families and colleagues

In addition, qualifications should include:

  • BA/BS degree minimum.
  • 2+ years of independent/public school teaching or related experience.
  • An advanced degree is preferred.
