Status: Full Time, Exempt, 10-month faculty, On-campus

 Job Summary:

The Literacy Specialist provides direct literacy instruction to students in grades K-5 using both a push-in and pull-out model.  The position is designed to support, not replace, the instruction delivered by classroom teachers. The Literacy Specialist will be a strategic thinker with a deep knowledge of ELA instruction, assessment practices, and collaboration strategies with homeroom teachers.

Key Objectives: 

  • Plan, organize, and implement reading lessons that support students in one-on-one settings and guided reading groups.
  • Observe students in reading classes and discuss findings to best support individual student needs
  • Perform evaluations of a diagnostic and prescriptive nature and provide post-assessment reports.
  • Participate in caregiver meetings to discuss a child’s learning profile and instructional approach to provide targeted reading instruction.
  • Maintain an effective system for communication with classroom teachers to ensure collaboration and continuity of instruction.
  • Engage in professional responsibilities that include collaborating effectively with colleagues, participating in pertinent employee meetings, performing necessary duties, and keeping abreast of current research and practices in reading, child development, and equity and inclusion.
  • Maintain verbal and written communication with caregivers and the Director of Student Support.
  • Apply culturally responsive pedagogy techniques to create a strong sense of safety, belonging, and learning engagement for every student.

 Skills and Competencies:

  • Deep and broad understanding of best practices in differentiated literacy instruction
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • 3 or more years of elementary and middle school experience
  • Experience with various literacy and reading intervention programs and assessments
  • Orton-Gillingham or Wilson training preferred
