North Yarmouth Academy is seeking a new Director of College Counseling. The new Director will take over after a successful tenure of the current counselor and will lead a comprehensive, student-centered college counseling program for NYA’s Upper School community.

Founded in 1814, North Yarmouth Academy is a coeducational, independent day and boarding school serving students from toddler through postgraduate study. Located on a 20+ acre campus just 10 miles north of Portland, Maine, NYA combines strong academic preparation with a commitment to character development grounded in the school’s core values of Respect, Honesty, Perseverance, Compassion, and Responsibility. NYA offers a rigorous curriculum that includes Advanced Placement courses, diverse electives, independent study opportunities, and specialized Diplomas with Distinction. The Academy is expanding its residential program to serve a growing population of domestic and international students.

The Director of College Counseling serves as a key academic leader and works closely with students, families, faculty, and college admission representatives to guide students through all aspects of the college search and application process. Reporting to the Head of School and collaborating closely with Upper School leadership, the Director oversees all college counseling programming for grades 9–12 and advises an average of 40-45 students annually.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized college counseling to juniors, seniors, and postgraduate students, including guidance on college selection, applications, essays, interviews, and financial aid.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive programming for students and families, including grade-level events, workshops, and college planning resources.
  • Write personalized and comprehensive school letters of recommendation for each applicant.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with college admission representatives and represent NYA at professional conferences and campus visits.
  • Manage Scoir and maintain accurate counseling records and data.
  • Coordinate college visits, college fairs, and admission-related events.
  • Partner with faculty, advisors, coaches, and arts faculty to support student goals, including NCAA recruitment and arts portfolio preparation.
  • Communicate regularly with families and produce grade-level college counseling updates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in college counseling or selective college admissions.
  • Strong knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Exceptional writing, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Independent school experience preferred.
