Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a full-time faculty member to join the Dance Department in the Boston Ballet School Professional Division at Walnut Hill for the 2025-2026 academic year starting in mid-August 2025. Dance Faculty are dedicated educators and active members of the school community, committed to fostering excellence in ballet education while supporting the School’s mission to develop intellectual artists of impact. This role requires exceptional ballet instruction, strong interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to cultivating a dynamic, innovative, and culturally responsive learning environment.

Schedule:

As a full-time faculty member in the Dance Department, the standard workweek is 37.5 hours. A typical Walnut Hill arts faculty workday runs from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM; however, weekly hours and daily schedules may vary based on departmental needs. Any adjustments to work hours will be determined by the Director of the Dance Department. This is a 10-month faculty position reporting to the Director of Dance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Programming: 

  • Teach, lead, and guide students in the assigned classes across various levels in alignment with the established curriculum;
  • Develop and oversee a cohesive ballet curriculum that reflects best practices, meets diverse learner needs, and aligns with institutional priorities;
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of the Dance Department on all aspects of teaching and learning, including syllabus planning, curriculum development, instruction, attendance taking and tracking, grading, writing recommendations, and providing student feedback; be cognizant of performance schedules, tech week, and other arts-related and student activities;
  • Participate in departmental responsibilities, including scheduling, attending, and leading classes, rehearsals, productions, and performances as needed; support students in various activities, including pre-screenings and college or company applications;
  • Arrive at the studio at least five minutes before class begins;
  • Substitute for colleagues when needed, which may occasionally include covering classes on a scheduled day off;
  • Stage, choreograph, and rehearse assigned repertoire for student presentations and performances as needed;
  • Support Showcase Weekends, working on weekends to assist students with performances and events;
  • Engage in community events and special programs, including Family Weekend, Open House, Curriculum Nights, Showcases and Performances, Development and Admissions events, master classes, Class Day/Night, Boar’s Head, Candlelight, Awards Ceremony, Graduation, and other assigned events;
  • Actively participate in J-Term programming as directed by the School Administration and the Director of the Dance Department;
  • Leverage technology to enhance student learning, including Veracross, Zoom, and other digital tools, and engage in training as needed; be prepared to teach both in-person and online if required; and
  • Contribute to curricular initiatives and other academic projects as implemented by the School Administration.

Collaboration and Faculty Development:

  • Collaborate with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive and supportive educational and workplace environment that aligns with the School’s mission, vision, and core values;
  • Partner with the Marketing and Development departments on advertising, fundraising, and promotional efforts; support Development in alumni relations and outreach initiatives;
  • Engage in the School’s diversity, equity, inclusion, & belonging and restorative practices initiatives, actively participating in anti-racist work and ongoing learning;
  • Support students and colleagues beyond classroom time as needed;
  • Attend and actively participate in faculty, staff, and department meetings, contributing to discussions on curriculum development, student support, and departmental initiatives; collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, and School Administration on educational growth, pedagogical innovation, and best practices;
  • Participate in Departmental Reviews and self-study, engaging fully in individual evaluations; be open to feedback and work with supervisors to set goals and expectations for continuous improvement;
  • Attend and participate in all Professional Development days, training programs, orientation sessions, benefits meetings, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training/drills; and
  • Pursue professional development opportunities within and beyond the school, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning, growth, innovation, and self-reflection.

Administrative & Operational Duties:

  • Perform additional administrative or educational duties as assigned by the Head of School or their designee.
  • Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) and Student Information System (SIS) to facilitate communication within the school community; maintain Class Pages, take and record attendance, and manage grades, comments, and progress reports as required;
  • Maintain accurate records, including correspondence with parents, advisee progress, teaching practices, and student work; and
  • Complete all required documentation in a timely manner, including paperwork, forms, surveys, employment documents, background checks, fingerprinting, and online training programs. Report absences, accidents, and injuries, and adhere to all school policies and legal requirements by established deadlines.

Community Engagement & Student Support:

  • Serve as a resource for students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress;
  • Actively participate in school-wide initiatives, including assemblies, performances, and community events;  model and encourage appropriate behavior and monitor students during events and programming;
  • Support student involvement in dance-related extracurricular activities, including competitions, exchange programs, and clubs;
  • Serve as a Student Advisor and work individually with each advisee to maximize their experience at Walnut Hill and provide students with a consistent and caring adult relationship while at school; maintain appropriate and open communication with the Director of Community Programs, the Class Dean, school administration, faculty, and parents regarding student issues; remain current on the school’s academic and artistic program requirements to actively guide students through planning and course registration; join Student Resource Committee (SRC) meetings as needed; and
  • Serve as a club advisor or the equivalent as assigned; serve as a school trip or event chaperone and provide weekend team duty (4 times per year), as assigned by the Student Life Office.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Skills and Experience:

  • At least five years of experience as a professional dancer;
  • At least five years of experience teaching dance to students aged 14–17;
  • Proven ability to rehearse and set both classical and contemporary choreography;
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, with a commitment to achieving shared goals;
  • Deep understanding of culturally responsive teaching and DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) practices;
  • Proficiency in technology, including learning management systems and Google Workspace for Education;
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including international students;
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, families, and colleagues.

Compensation:

Walnut Hill offers a comprehensive compensation package, including salary and benefits, aligned with experience and internal equity.

In addition to Walnut Hill’s salary and benefits, Dance Faculty may be eligible to receive an additional 20% to 25% of their base salary from the Boston Ballet School for summer responsibilities, pending agreement with the Boston Ballet administration.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands include dexterity for tools, equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Physical demands also include the ability and dexterity to practice and demonstrate the appropriate academic and artistic discipline. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
