Assistant Controller

Administrator / Full-Time

Thayer Academy, Braintree, MA

PURPOSE:

Assist the Director of Finance with the financial controls and accounts of the academy.  This position is responsible for the entering of data and management of monthly closing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in all phases of the accounting cycle including but not limited to AP, AR, accruals, fixed assets, depreciation, prepaid, and the closing process
  • Reconcile gifts with the development team and resolve discrepancies
  • Work with the Accounts Receivable Manager to reconcile tuition to the general ledger monthly
  • Management of various cash and credit card accounts and bank reconciliations
  • Responsible for all other account reconciliations
  • Assist in the preparation of month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial statements
  • Inventory reconciliation
  • Identify improvements for internal processes and control
  • Assist with the preparations for the annual audit
  • Ad hoc analyses and projects, as needed
  • Review financial statements and budgets for any misclassifications
  • In conjunction with the Payroll Administrator and Human Resources Director audit the biweekly payroll
  • Oversee and maintain financial software
  • Support the Accounts Payable Coordinator/Financial Aid Coordinator
  • Complete year-end reporting including 1099’s and w-2  audit
  • Assist with the annual 403B audit
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as requested or required.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

  • Supervises the Associate Director of Student Financial Services

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in accounting
  • Minimum of three to five years working in an accounting position, preferably in an independent school setting
  • Highly skilled in balance sheet reconciliations, financial forecasting, and analysis
  • Familiarity with accounting software (experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT)
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel and other Microsoft applications.

EFFORT:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Walk to other Campus locations as required

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Normal Office environment
