Title:               Camp Nurse

Reports to: Health Supervisor/ Assistant Director 

Wheeler Summer’s philosophy is all about giving campers an opportunity to be active in an outdoor environment, explore new things, have fun, build confidence, and make long-lasting friendships! 

Our Summer Camp programs, for children ages 3 to 15, feature a busy day full of fun camp activities for campers grouped by age. Campers who are curious to explore have a choice of our two-week-long Specialty Camps in athletics, arts, and enrichment directed by highly qualified organizations and our wonderful Wheeler faculty. Our Specialty Camps are full-day programs that include a half-day of Specialty Camp and a half-day of Traditional Camp. Swim lessons take place for campers in both programs. Wheeler summer will also offer a few specialized programs this summer that are full-day programs.

Position Purpose: 

The onsite registered nurse will be scheduled to work 8:15 am to 4:15 pm, Monday through Friday, while summer camp is in session. The position will assist with health visits, emergencies, injuries, and illness management at camp. This nurse would work in collaboration with two other nurses in the health center. 

Health Responsibilities: 

  • Administer routine medications and treatment to campers and staff. 
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children and staff while promoting health practices. 
  • Document all injuries, illnesses, and care rendered in electronic health records and maintain health records per camp policies and procedures. 
  • Stock and prepare first aid kits for various on site locations. 
  • Collaborate closely with other registered nurses that encompass the Health Team at camp. 
  • Provide first aid care to injured campers and staff. 
  • Maintain inventory of health supplies and materials. 
  • Contact families of ill or injured campers and update them as necessary. 
  • Interact with campers, families, and staff to resolve safety related issues and answer questions as needed. 
  • Serve as a medical and mental health emergency responder. 
  • Ensure a calm, caring, welcoming environment for campers and staff in the health center. 
  • Maintain an awareness of diversity and cultural values, beliefs, and priorities when providing care to campers and staff. 
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of health information. 
  • Assist with duties assigned by the Health Supervisor. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or Camp Administration.

Qualifications: 

  • The qualified candidate must be physically able to participate in activities and make informed and sound judgements, particularly around safety under a variety of circumstances. 
  • Possess excellent communication skills, resourcefulness, and capability of working with minimal supervision and always demonstrates a high level of professionalism. 
  • A minimum of one year nursing experience in a community setting required
  • No camp experience required but highly preferred
  • BLS CPR/AED/FA certification required
  • Must be a MA state licensed registered Nurse (RN) with pediatric training preferred. 
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing 

Staff Orientation: June 7-9

Camp hours: 8:15am-4:15 pm Monday through Friday with some exceptions

This is a seasonal position that is exempt from overtime and benefits.
