The Pool Director is part of the Summer Camp Leadership team and is responsible for the staff, campers, and programming at the pool. One of the goals of Concord Academy Summer Camp is for all campers to leave us better and more confident swimmers.  Reporting to the Camp Director, the Pool Director is responsible for providing leadership and mentoring to all swim staff and developing a relationship with campers and their families to ensure a safe, fun, and enriching experience at the pool.  The Pool Director is the direct supervisor to all swim staff.  Candidates must be available to work the full eight-week season and be able to attend staff training dates the week before camp starts. Additional working weeks in June and August can be contracted. The Pool Director is a seasonal position.

 

General Responsibilities: 

Plan, direct, and supervise the camp’s swim program.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Prepare/set-up pool area prior to the camp season
  • Direct, train, and coach swim staff in their daily responsibilities and emergency procedures
  • Serve as a member of the administrative team developing training for all staff and leading swim staff training before and during the camp season
  • Conduct two seasonal evaluations for all swim staff over the course of the summer (mid-summer/end of season)
  • Develop and implement strategies to help swim staff, all staff, and campers be successful and safe at the pool
  • Proactively communicate with parents about successes and concerns regarding their child
  • Participate in the implementation of all swimming activities including teaching and lifeguarding
  • Schedule swim lessons, job rotation, afternoon and weekend lifeguarding shifts to ensure appropriate staffing
  • Maintain accurate records on all campers as they progress through swim levels
  • Oversee the evaluation of campers in swim lessons and ensure swim certifications are completed for all campers 
  • Attend all staff trainings during the week before camp opens
  • Maintain required records of pool chemistry
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment and maintain equipment in good working condition
  • Conduct daily check of all equipment in pool area for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
  • Compile a written equipment and supplies inventory at the end of the season
  • Uphold all policies and philosophies of Concord Academy Summer Camp
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and provide necessary instruction to staff and campers
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the pool area
  • Cognitive and communication abilities to plan and conduct the activity to achieve camper development objectives
  • Ability to work with different age and skill levels
  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision to campers

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current Lifeguard and CPR/AED/First Aid certifications from a nationally recognized organization
  • Current WSI certification
  • Experience lifeguarding and teaching swimming
  • Proven supervisory experience and knowledge of pool management
  • Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a busy camp setting
  • Desire and ability to supervise, lead, and positively manage staff and campers in a cooperative, team-oriented camp atmosphere
  • Possess excellent character, integrity, adaptability, patience, self-control, enthusiasm, and sense of humor
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Ability to relate well to peers
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must pass a MA State run background check including a CORI and SORI

 

Job Requirements:

  • Available 8:15am-4:30pm, Monday – Friday; some evening and weekend shifts 
  • Some high-level activity which may include running, dancing, swimming and jumping 
  • Occasional lifting, bending, and climbing stairs
  • Frequent talking, listening, walking, sitting, and standing
  • Demonstrate lifeguard and swimming skills including proficiency in all strokes, rescues, removals, CPR and first aid

 

This position is seasonal and not eligible to receive benefits other than summer camp tuition discounts. Consistent with state law, this position will be required to successfully complete CORI, SORI, and fingerprinting background checks prior to employment each summer.
