Position Summary

The Fessenden School’s Middle School seeks a Latin teacher for grades 5 and 6.  The teacher is responsible for teaching 4 classes of 12-16 boys, being a member of one of the 5th and 6th grade teams, supervising study halls as assigned, and coaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create and plan lessons that connect to the curriculum and sequential units that have been developed in collaboration with the Language Department Chair and colleagues

  • Incorporate project-based learning, educational technology, and universal design principles into lessons

  • Collaborate with colleagues, Department Chair, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to incorporate multicultural education into the Latin curriculum

  • Collaborate with the Head of Middle School and the Middle School Dean of Students to facilitate character education and service-learning programs

  • Exemplify the School’s mission and community principles, including honesty, compassion, and respect

  • Participate in and help facilitate all division and grade-level activities and meetings

  • Coach a sport and/or supervise guided study hall as assigned

  • Collaborate with colleagues within grades 5 and 6, language department, student support team, and the Learning Resources Department

  • Perform duties such as supervising dismissal, recess, and lunch; being an advisor, grade team member, and student club facilitator; leading/assisting with fall orientation, grade trips, one mandatory overnight grade trip (3 days 2 nights), and events.

  • Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and students, which includes writing personalized comments for advisees and regular parent communication

  • Attend faculty meetings; typically on Mondays from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm

  • Attend professional development meetings: three from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm and three from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance

  • Maintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention training

  • Other duties as assigned

Schedule

  • Orientation August 19 & 20, 2025

  • School year August 26, 2024 to June 10, 2025

  • Monday – Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject

  • Two years of experience instructing middle school students in an academic program

  • Ability to develop and provide a universal design instructional approach to meet the learning needs of a range of students

  • Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships

  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to facilitate learning in a healthy learning environment

  • Ability to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization, and problem-solving with minimal supervision

  • Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, justice, diversity and equity

  • A commitment to boys and boys’ education

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in education or related subject

  • Teaching certification

  • Athletic coaching experience
