We are seeking an experienced, adaptable, and approachable social studies and English teacher to join our team as a vital member of the Upper School Faculty, with the potential to evolve into an academic leadership role. As an educator in our school, you will guide students through a dynamic learning experience that combines interactive classroom discussions, small group instruction, and project-based learning opportunities. In Sage’s Upper School (Grades 5-8), students will explore the interconnectedness of the world through in-depth studies of social studies and English, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the micro and macro levels of society. By delving into topics such as historical events, cultural studies, literature, and language arts, students will develop critical thinking skills and a nuanced perspective on the interconnected nature of the human experience. Beyond that, you will play a crucial role in cultivating strong writing skills among middle school students, emphasizing the importance of effective communication and expression. Our interdisciplinary program ensures that social studies and English remain relevant, updated, and closely integrated with other subjects. Students are empowered to cultivate independence and pursue their unique interests and passions, fostering a love for learning and a deeper understanding of the interconnected disciplines of social studies and English.

 Responsibilities will include

  • Teach sections of 5th and 6th grade English and social studies as part of our humanities department
  • Co-lead 6th grade students in our interdisciplinary Humanities Expo project
  • Communicate in a timely and professional manner with all community stakeholders, including parents
  • Integrate classroom technologies to enhance teaching and learning 
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to develop interdisciplinary projects and integrate humanities concepts across the curriculum.
  • Actively participate in the development of the department curriculum and co-curriculum 
  • Maintain an active presence and participate fully in campus life by attending school events and activities when possible.
  • Assume additional responsibilities (e.g., serving on committees and advising clubs) in other areas of school life 
  • Stay current with the latest developments and research in education by attending professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to develop interdisciplinary projects and integrate humanities concepts across the curriculum

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, history, anthropology, English, or a related humanities field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Prior experience teaching middle school social studies and/or English, preferably in a gifted education or advanced learning environment
  • Strong knowledge and passion for social studies and English concepts and their application to real-world contexts
  • Familiarity with inquiry-based learning and hands-on, experiential teaching methods
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • A collaborative mindset and a commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing
  • A positive attitude, a flexible approach, and a sense of humor
