The Position: The Lower School Science Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing a dynamic curriculum with engaging lessons to students in Preschool through 4th grade.

The School: Founded in 1938, SMCDS is an independent day school of about 250 students serving children from toddler through grade eight.  The school emphasizes strong academics and features a comprehensive arts program.  The school’s mission calls for students to be courageous learners, who are caring citizens, and are world ready.

The Location: The school’s well-appointed 7-acre campus overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is situated in historic Newport, Rhode Island, minutes from some of the most gorgeous beaches and coastal landscapes that New England has to offer.  Newport and the beaches of Aquidneck Island are destination locations and teachers have the opportunity to integrate the geographic and cultural surroundings into their curricular programming.  There are numerous universities and colleges close by, including, Salve Regina, University of Rhode Island, Brown, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence College and Roger Williams, adding to the cultural and intellectual climate of the area.  Providence is a short drive (35 minutes), Boston is a bit more (1 hour and 30 minutes) and New York City (4 hours) is close enough for a weekend trip.  This is a highly desirable place to live and work.

Desired Qualifications: The ideal candidate is one who puts an emphasis on project-based learning through a collaborative, inquiry-based approach, where open-ended experimentation and design play a significant role in the science classroom. Content expertise, knowledge in differentiated instruction and assessment, willingness and ability to collaborate and implement innovative pedagogical initiatives, including technology, that focus on a student-first, hands-on, experiential learning is desired. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills are essential to the role, as is a willingness to participate fully in the community beyond the classroom.  A bachelor’s degree is required, and a Master’s degree is preferred.  At least two years of successful teaching experience is also preferred.
