Fayerweather is a pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade progressive school seeking an energetic, experienced PreK-4 Science Specialist responsible for developing and implementing a dynamic and comprehensive pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade science curriculum. The candidate will engage students in hands-on and interactive learning experiences that foster a love for science and inquiry-based thinking. The role involves collaborating with other teachers, integrating early concepts in technology, engineering, and math into lessons, and adapting teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students. Fayerweather has a co-teaching, mixed-age, and grade classroom model. This position will begin in the fall of the 2024-25 academic year. We work hard to present an anti-bias curriculum by amplifying minoritized voices and lived experiences that students explore through literature, history, writing, and storytelling.

 Key Responsibilities

• Create a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another through student-centered instruction, collaboration, and authentic assessment.
• Design and implement a science curriculum that aligns with state and Next-Generation Science Standards.
• Teach science concepts clearly and engagingly, using hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and interactive activities to enhance student understanding and retention.
• Have enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues across grades and disciplines.
• Create and maintain a positive learning environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and respect among students.
• Meet students where they are as learners by differentiating curriculum and instruction.
• Assess student learning through various methods, provide constructive feedback, and adapt instructional strategies to meet students’ needs.
• Stay current with educational research and best practices in science education through ongoing professional development opportunities.
• Communicate with parents about students’ progress and involve the community in science-related projects and activities.
• Work closely with other teachers and staff to integrate science with other subjects and contribute to the school’s educational mission.
• Possess a growth mindset when engaging with relevant and mission-driven professional learning. 

Skills and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Science Education, or a related field.
• State teaching certification with an endorsement in elementary education or science is helpful but optional.
• Previous teaching experience in elementary education or a related field is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of science content and pedagogy.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to engage young students in learning and foster a positive classroom environment.
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of the philosophy of progressive education.
• Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging in an elementary/middle school.

Responsibilities at FSS

• Performing various duties, including recess coverage, lunch duty, and creating curricular displays
• Document curriculum as it evolves throughout the year
• Narrative report writing and timely communication with parents
• Attending weekly staff meetings
• Actively participate in admissions programming as needed
• and other duties as assigned
