Position Summary: Falmouth Academy is seeking a long-term 9th-grade geology and environmental science substitute teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. The position will begin on September 3 through approximately January 31. Preferred candidates will have an academic background in geology and/or environmental science, and a record of demonstrated success working with young people in education or a related field. We seek enthusiastic individuals with a demonstrated passion for the process of scientific inquiry and for teaching that builds interest in, enthusiasm for, and mastery of the subject.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach three sections of 9th-grade geology and environmental science (GES) with the possibility of an additional section of chemistry depending on experience
- Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, labs, and handouts
- Prepare weekly labs, including ordering supplies, set up and clean up
- Maintain student attendance records, grades, progress reports, and other required records
- Evaluate and grade student class work, assignments, lab reports, and science fair papers
- Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction
- Maintain regular office hours to advise and assist students
- Support student science fair projects during weekly science fair block
- Be proficient in experimental design and analysis
- Participate in some evening or weekend activities, including meetings, professional development, or other school events
- Other duties, as assigned
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in geology, environmental science, or a related field
- Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues and parents
- Enthusiastic interest in teaching, motivating, coaching, and mentoring high school students
- A role model for students
- Ability to meet classroom obligations on a consistent schedule
- Ability to attend meetings before and after the typical school day schedule and sometimes in the evening
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Works in an environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods.
- Be able to lift 15 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment.
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
