Learning Skills Teacher

Position Overview

This position, with a start date of August 15, 2024, will join the Akin Learning Center as a learning skills teacher. This full-time, 10 month teaching position will involve one-on-one and small group academic coaching with high school level neurodiverse learners. The position will also include serving as an advisor to a small group of students, actively participating in the residential life program, and supervising two seasons of afternoon activities.

Specific Duties:

  • Teach 6 periods of learning skills classes in the Akin Learning Center focusing on study skills, executive functioning training, and content-driven work. Students are taught either one-on-one or in small groups.
  • Consult with the Director of Student Support on the development of individual learning plans for Learning Center students.
  • Work closely with classroom teachers to support positive learning strategies for neurodiverse learners, understand student strengths and challenges, and ensure that classroom accommodations are understood and met.
  • Maintain contact with families and educational consultants to inform of student progress.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and pursue continuing education and professional development in order to remain current on research in the field of neurodiversity and academic coaching strategies.
  • Participate in the residential life program through evening and weekend duty responsibilities and the supervision of 2 afternoon activities
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Experience with teaching learning strategies and academic coaching of high school students
  • Knowledge and training in learning issues and interventions
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
