Grade 5 and 6 English Teacher & Grade 6 Homeroom Teacher

Full Time

Start date: August 23, 2024

Lesley Ellis, an independent preschool-grade 8 school, seeks experienced English teacher candidates who are adept at supporting students in acquiring and achieving a high level of interest and mastery in literacy skills, analysis, and critical thinking.

Candidates should be able to foster and maintain academic engagement and have a strong commitment to an anti-bias approach. We are looking for an individual who will bring expertise and enthusiasm to teaching and have the desire to work closely with teammates to ensure an enriching, engaging, and challenging school experience.

Respecting and embracing differences has been at the core of Lesley Ellis’s education since the school’s early days. Our anti-bias curriculum is rooted in a developmental model of learning that engages children’s innate desire to observe, question, consider, and eventually think deeply about complex interpersonal and societal issues. In 2005, we received the Leading Edge Award for Equity and Justice from the National Association of Independent Schools, and we continue to learn and work against systems of injustice, including racism, by practicing behavior that demonstrates appreciation for multiple perspectives and engaging in conversations and actions that confront bias at all developmental levels.

Expectations:

  • Implement an innovative, creative, and challenging English curriculum for middle school students in collaboration with the middle school English team.
  • Oversee supported study periods for students who need additional help with English.
  • Plan anti-bias and current events curriculum and implement and oversee all organizational and general communication of the 6th grade homeroom, in collaboration with another member of the team.
  • Establish relationships with all students that are based on respect for individual learning styles, developmental stages, and temperaments.
  • Foster open communication, decision-making, and problem-solving channels between parents, faculty, and administration.
  • Write progress reports two times per year.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for working with middle school students.
  • Experience teaching middle school English.
  • A post-secondary degree in English or Education is strongly preferred.
  • A commitment to academic rigor and engaging curriculum.

School year position. Competitive salary.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to: Head of School, Deanne Benson at jobs@lesleyellis.org
