Salary Range:$45,000.00 To 70,000.00 Annually

Walnut Hill School for the Arts seeks a full-time faculty member to join the World Languages department to teach French and Spanish for the 2024-2025 academic year starting in mid-August 2024. This is a full-time academic year position reporting to the Head of World Languages.

Walnut Hill language programs aim to teach language and encourage cross-cultural exploration in an immersive environment; students are required to use only the target language to engage in class, even at the introductory level. The department places special emphasis on speaking, and students hone their skills through active participation in different activities such as story-telling, songs, routine conversations, presentations, and debates. Courses are comprehensive and sequential, and celebrate language, culture, and personal growth.

Residential Life Opportunity: As a boarding school, opportunities to live on campus and work as a dorm parent in the Residential Life program may be available. Dorm parent hiring is managed through the Student Life Office. Applicants interested in pursuing a position as a dorm parent may indicate their interest during the online application process.

Responsibilities:

Teaching & Department Duties

  • Teach five sections in the World Languages department, covering both French and Spanish; participate in the winter intersession by creating and facilitating at least one interdisciplinary course; and employ best practices in teaching within this academic discipline;
  • Prepare lessons and develop curriculum that reflects the diverse educational and cultural backgrounds of the student body; teach, lead, and guide students and promote an open and safe classroom space;
  • Foster a skills-centered, student-centered learning environment;
  • Utilize technology and other educational tools to support student learning; and
  • Be prepared to teach both in person in the classroom, and online if needed.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Support the Student Life program including serving as a student advisor, club advisor, chaperoning school events, weekend duty, and/or participating in other opportunities for community involvement that arise throughout the school year;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to foster a positive working and educational environment that supports the school’s mission, vision, and core values;
  • Attend and/or engage in student arts productions, shows, exhibitions, and performances;
  • Attend and participate in all department meetings, assembly, Professional Development days, training and orientation programs, benefit meetings, mandatory seminars, team-building exercises, and safety training; and
  • Pursue professional development opportunities in and out of school; display willingness and ability to grow, learn, explore new approaches, and practice self-reflection.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in French and Spanish instruction in a high school setting or equivalent experience recommended;
  • Native or near-native fluency in French and Spanish and fluency in English required;
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience preferred; Master’s degree recommended;
  • Ability to skillfully develop and implement multi-level curriculum;
  • Wide repertoire of teaching skills including developing in-person and online curriculum;
  • Comfort with technology and willingness to adopt new technologies as needed;
  • Innovative teaching practices and a focus on skills-centered learning;
  • Strong collaboration and team-oriented working and leadership skills;
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community;
  • Ability to speak authentically about the imperative for diversity, equity, and inclusion in schools;
  • Be committed to learning about and practicing anti-racist work;
  • Share an educational and artistic vision that aligns with the core principles of Walnut Hill;

Physical Demands

Physical demands include dexterity for office machines and supply operations including but not limited to writing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.

Note: Faculty salaries are based on the School’s salary scale, education, and experience.
