English Language Support Teacher
Position Overview
This position, with a start date of August 15, 2024, will join the Akin Learning Center staff as an English Language Support teacher. This full-time, 10 month teaching position will involve one-on-one and small group academic coaching with high school level English Language Learners. The position will also include serving as an academic advisor to a small group of students, actively participating in the residential life program, and helping to coordinate international student cultural activities.
Specific Duties:
- Teach 6 periods of ELS in the Akin Learning Center focusing on reading, writing, and speaking skills to promote success in the classroom
- Work closely with the Director of Student Learning Support to communicate student needs and expectations to teachers
- Work with the school’s admission team to assist ELS students and families through the admission process, as well as work with students’ advisors to stay in regular contact with international families and educational consultants
- Act as an advocate and liaison for all second language learners on campus, even if not specifically enrolled in the ELS support program
- Work with the Student Life Team in implementing activities that address the social and cultural adjustment of our international students, making community announcements to acknowledge and celebrate high holidays and events of cultural significance, and co-planning international student orientation
- Participate in the residential life program through evening/weekend duty responsibilities and the supervision of 1-2 afternoon activities
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience academically supporting high school English Language Learners in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics
- Knowledge and training in learning issues and interventions
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred
