HMS is Seeking a Director of Residential Life

Full-Time, Live-in Position 

We seek an individual to join our experienced and collaborative faculty as Director of Residential Life. This is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position to begin summer 2024.

About High Mowing School  

High Mowing School is home to over 330 preschool–grade 12 students, including 60-70 high school boarding students who live in two traditional dorms on campus. We are committed to fostering a caring, respectful, and diverse community where academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility are highly valued and fostered.

In 2017, Pine Hill Waldorf School merged with High Mowing School, creating a thriving, integrated preschool–12 school that offers students, families, and teachers more opportunities. High Mowing’s culture is steeped in decades-long traditions that support a strong community life. The Parent Association actively leads an engaged parent body interested in supporting teachers and families.

HMS is centrally set on a hilltop among rolling farmland in scenic southern New Hampshire on 300+ acres. The Town of Wilton is only 1-3 hours away from a variety of experiences in any direction — the big city in Boston, MA; camping and incredible foliage in central NH; the charming New England seacoast in Portland, ME, or Cape Cod, MA; or great skiing and shopping in Burlington, VT. Travel a bit further to Montreal in Quebec, Canada, for a weekend with an international feel.

About the position:

High Mowing School is a Waldorf  PS – 12, boarding/day school located in southern New Hampshire. The Director of Residential Life is a collaborative community member who is responsible for leadership and development of HMS’s residential life program. The Director of Residential Life will oversee two dormitories with overall capacity of 60-70 students and will play a vital role in the emotional life and academic support of students. This position is also responsible for managing student housing and residential leadership, including supervision of dormitory staff and support staff and their corresponding programmatic and physical plant budgets.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Provide visionary leadership to the residential life team.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the residential program, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and positive living environment.
  • Oversee the dorm when on duty and act as the designated point of contact for dormitory students and staff.

Community Building:

  • Develop and implement programs and initiatives that aligns with High Mowing School  and promotes a sense of community and belonging among students.
  • Develop and implement leadership opportunities for students including the selection, training, and supervision of the Student Residential Assistant (RA) program
  • Gain and maintain trust with students and staff members.
  • Foster a culture of respect, responsibility, and collaboration within the residential community.

Student Life & Safety:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of boarding students
  • Manage boarding students’ personal crises and emergency situations as needed
  • Develop, communicate, and enforce residential life policies and procedures in alignment with the school’s mission and values.
  • Effectively communicate and hold students accountable to community standards
  • In coordination with the Dean of Students, address disciplinary matters with fairness, consistency, and a student-centered approach.
  • Assist the Director of Health Services with the monitoring of student health and administration of  necessary service/medications to all boarders.
  • Conduct grounds inspections for safety and security, and secure buildings as required (i.e., science and library buildings).
  • Plan and facilitate weekly dorm meetings.

Communication:

  • Maintain regular communication with students, parents, and staff regarding residential life updates, events, and initiatives.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students, as well as other school departments, including academic, athletics, and administrative staff, to integrate the residential life experience with the overall educational program.
  • Attend regular faculty and staff meetings.
  • Promote positive and effective working relationships among students and parents
  • Promote continued research and understanding of Waldorf education for integration in the residential program

Administrative:

  • Provide in-service training specific to new and returning residential life faculty.
  • Create and maintain the weekly dorm duty schedule (to include additional staffing as needed, weekend activities, and student transportation needs).
  • Initiate and participate in ongoing review and improvements of policies pertaining to residential life.
  • Review nightly duty notes and follow up as needed.
  • Manage the residential life budget line(s).
  • Coordinate students, program, and school transportation needs (including scheduling of bus usage, student transportation for airport transportation and various appointments).
  • Participate in staffing the student work service program.
  • Conduct weekly meetings of residential life faculty.
  • Participate in boarding students’ applications review (if applicable).
  • Provide reports and data as requested by the Dean of Students and/or the Head of School.
  • Member of committees as requested by the Dean of Students and/or Head of School.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience as Director of Residential Life in a boarding high school
  • Extensive coaching experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in related field preferred
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal skills, organization, time management, and collaborative skills
  • Comfortable working in a small organization, performing a wide variety of functions
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, which includes evening and weekend hours as required
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Proficient in G-Suite and other office and digital communication tools.
