Assistant Director of External Relations

Administrator / Full-Time

The Roxbury Latin School, Boston, MA

The Roxbury Latin School is seeking a skilled and creative communication and marketing professional as its new Assistant Director of External Relations. This individual will report to the Director of External Relations and will work on a wide variety of digital and print projects, extending the brand of the school, promoting awareness and goodwill, and advancing Roxbury Latin’s mission. This individual will be responsible for helping to identify distinctive features of the school and to communicate the “RL story,” articulating the school’s program, vision, and value—with an in-depth understanding of its mission and traditions—through a strategic, robust multimedia approach, engaging and informing both external and internal constituencies.

Working closely with the Director of External Relations and colleagues throughout the school—including members of the development and admission offices—the Assistant Director will serve as primary writer and “reporter” of school news and events, and will lead or assist on various strategic institutional communication and marketing initiatives. This individual will contribute to developing creative, high-caliber, digital and print communications and marketing materials; ensure brand identity and messaging coherence across all channels; and manage production of articles and publications, web-based projects, social media content, and other related projects from concept through implementation. Those projects include the triannual Newsletter, school website, admission marketing materials, fundraising and development collateral, and all social media platforms.

This individual will share responsibility for the user experience of the school’s website, ensuring—with the Director of External Relations, and Director of Digital and Graphic Design—that the site dynamically and accurately communicates the mission and program of the school to a variety of audiences, including prospective families, alumni, parents, and the general public.

In addition to exemplary writing and editing skills, the Assistant Director should have knowledge of marketing campaigns, publicity and promotional practices, and social media marketing. The Assistant Director will be expected to attend various events throughout the school year (including occasional evenings and weekends) and will assist in event planning and execution, as related to external audiences.

  • Exemplary writing and copy-editing skills, and an ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • A track record of effective, positive, and client-centric relations in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • A detail-oriented approach with ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Google suite applications, social media platforms, and social media management tools.
  • Experience working with outside vendors, and ability to complete projects with vendors on time and on budget.

  • Experience with WordPress or other online content management systems is a plus.
  • Experience with basic digital design (including video and photo-editing) and graphic design software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) is a plus.

Experience working in a school, university, or nonprofit organization is preferred. There may be opportunities, despite a demanding schedule for the essential aspects of this position, for involvement additionally in the extracurricular life of the school.
