Arts Department Chair and Music Teacher

The Fenn School, a grade 4-9 boys day school in Concord, MA, seeks an individual to lead its Arts program as Arts Department Chair. Within the context of Fenn’s educational philosophy, each department chair is responsible for curricular leadership and curriculum development; departmental staffing; faculty supervision, evaluation, and professional growth; budget oversight; and student placement and support. Additionally, department chairs teach three or four sections of their subject, advise, and sometimes coach.

Responsibilities

● Oversee Fenn’s Arts curriculum, including visual arts, music, and drama, in collaboration with the division heads;

● Provide vision and oversight for Fenn’s Arts department philosophy, pedagogy, skills, and content in collaboration with the division heads;

● Support and supervise Arts teachers through departmental meetings, individual feedback and evaluation for faculty members, and pursuit of individual and departmental professional development;

● Oversee the staffing of the Arts department in consultation with the division heads;

● Oversee and manage the Arts department budget;

● Manage student placement in Arts courses, in conjunction and collaboration with other department chairs and division heads;

● Address student and parent concerns in collaboration with advisors, teachers, division heads, the administrative team;

● Teach four sections of Music;

● Serve as a student advisor;

● Lead Fenn’s Treble Chorus;

● Accompany and lead community signing, which takes place during All School Meeting on Mondays and Fridays;

● Depending on candidate’s interest and school needs, the Arts Department Chair could coach one season of athletics in Fenn’s Lower, Middle, or Upper School;

● Provide support and leadership for annual events and performances such as art gallery shows, theater productions, and band and choral concerts;

● Serve on the Academic Department Chair Group;

● Keep administrative colleagues informed about all relevant matters in the Arts department;

● Review teacher comments as assigned by division heads;

● Other duties as assigned;

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred;

● Significant Music teaching experience; administrative experience preferred;

● Leadership experience; strong communication skills; a commitment to collaboration;

● Experience with and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work in a school setting

● A passion for and understanding of working with adolescent boys;

● Experience engaging in productive conversations with faculty, parents, and students;

● The ability to foster connections between the Arts and other academic disciplines;
