The Governor’s Academy, the oldest boarding school in New England, inspires and engages inquisitive students in ninth through twelfth grade. Our 456-acre campus is located thirty miles north of Boston and five miles south of Newburyport, a classic New England coastal town. Govs has approximately 400 students and 200 employees.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a full-time Art Department position, and the successful candidate will be deeply invested in a student-centered pedagogy providing authentic, hands-on learning experiences, have enthusiasm and appreciation for working with adolescents, and be a collaborative member of the teaching faculty. Additionally, art teachers at Governor’s are encouraged to create unique, intensive, semester-long classes to be added to the course catalog. Also, this position will include ongoing contact with and direct responsibility for the academic and social life of students on campus (in loco parentis) and will involve specific responsibilities that include coaching in athletics, directing in the performing arts, or other afternoon program involvement. All faculty are advisors to a small group of students in their second year at the Academy, and all faculty are assigned occasional weekend duty. Depending on whether the successful candidate is housed on campus, there may be residential life duty. With Teaching Faculty status comes the expectation of total involvement in students’ lives on campus.

The Kaiser Arts Center includes a digital media lab, studio art space, photo darkrooms and digital print equipment, a ceramics studio, and display galleries. At Governor’s Academy, the Fine Arts are an integral part of all students’ experience. We emphasize creative thinking and self-expression as essential components of one’s overall academic skill set. We encourage students to learn to take, give, and utilize critique, and we engage with artists from within and outside of the Govs community who display their work in our shared spaces. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching:

• 4 sections of visual arts courses that explore a variety of media; may include 9th-grade survey art classes through college-level. Course content will include studio arts and may include additional media based on the skill set of the teacher
• Assist with in-house art gallery set-up and take-down of all visiting and student art shows
• Work collaboratively with Art Department colleagues, faculty, administrators, and parents
• Assign grades and write comments for all students in classes taught in accordance with the semester academic calendar
• Assist with students’ entering exhibitions and creating portfolios

Afternoon Program:

• 2 seasons of coaching or equivalent

Residential Life Program:

• Dorm parenting or equivalent if accompanied by housing on campus

Student Life:

• Advisor
• Occasional weekend and chaperone duties
• Must show a demonstrated interest, through teaching practices and/or professional development experiences, in creating equitable, and inclusive, spaces and in pursuing social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work through the curriculum

QUALIFICATIONS

B.A. required; Bachelor degree in Fine arts preferred; Master of Fine Arts preferred; strong background in studio art preferred; experience teaching in an independent school or college setting preferred; coaching and/or playing interscholastic athletics or experience as a director in performing art preferred; must be able to work collegially; must be committed to working in a diverse community and have the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations; must enjoy working with young people in a boarding school environment; must have a valid driver’s license.
