Job Description

Newton Country Day is an independent, preparatory school for girls in grades 5-12. Educating women of Courage and Confidence since 1880.

Position: Head Varsity Volleyball Coach
Location: Newton Country Day School, Newton, MA
Schedule: Mid-August through early November, including preseason preparation and potential postseason play. Practices are held Monday through Friday afternoons, with occasional weekend tournaments or events.
Stipend: $7,000–$9,000, commensurate with experience

Position Summary

Newton Country Day School seeks a dynamic and experienced Head Varsity Volleyball Coach to lead one of the school’s premier athletic programs. With a strong tradition of competitive success and a deep commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes, the Falcons Volleyball program is well positioned for continued excellence and growth.

The ideal candidate will bring high-level coaching experience (collegiate or equivalent), a demonstrated passion for leading girls’ volleyball, and a commitment to building a positive, competitive, and values-driven program. This individual will serve as the face of the varsity volleyball program and will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including coaching, player development, program leadership, and collaboration within a mission-aligned school community.

Position Responsibilities

Coaching & Program Leadership

  • Lead all aspects of the varsity volleyball program, including practice design, match preparation, in-game coaching, and postseason play, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in girls’ athletics.
  • Design and implement developmentally appropriate training plans that reflect best practices in coaching female student-athletes, including attention to physical development, confidence building, communication styles, and team dynamics.
  • Develop and apply strategic game plans that maximize team performance while teaching athletes how to think, adapt, and compete with poise.
  • Model and uphold the values of a Sacred Heart education by coaching with empathy, integrity, accountability, and high expectations, supporting the holistic development of student-athletes—mind, body, and spirit.
  • Foster a competitive, inclusive, and mission-driven team culture that teaches courage, confidence, resilience, and sportsmanship, and values character as highly as results.

Athlete Development, Mentorship & Team Culture

  • Serve as a visible and trusted mentor to student-athletes, connecting with them to create an environment in which girls feel supported, challenged, and empowered to lead.
  • Provide individualized technical instruction and feedback that supports athletic growth, self-awareness, and confidence over time.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social-emotional dimensions of coaching adolescent girls, including the importance of communication, belonging, identity, and psychological safety within a team setting.
  • Support student-athletes’ growth beyond the court by reinforcing time management, accountability, self-advocacy, and healthy competitive habits.

Program Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Work in close partnership with the Director of Athletics to ensure alignment with departmental philosophy, school expectations, and long-term program vision.
  • Collaborate with JV and Middle School coaches to build a vertically integrated volleyball program that intentionally prepares girls for progression and leadership at each level.
  • Communicate clearly, consistently, and professionally with student-athletes, families, and colleagues, contributing to a culture of trust, transparency, and mutual respect.
  • Serve as a positive ambassador for girls’ athletics within the school community, reinforcing the value and visibility of women’s sports at Newton Country Day School.

Operations, Safety & Program Stewardship

  • Oversee all operational aspects of the program, including game-day logistics, equipment management, scouting, and video analysis.
  • Uphold all safety protocols and best practices, prioritizing the physical and emotional well-being of student-athletes.
  • Maintain organized records, schedules, and communication systems that support a smooth and positive season experience.
  • Be willing and eligible to drive a school minibus to away contests, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Prior coaching experience at the high school, club, or collegiate level is required; head coaching experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative, school-based athletics environment with shared goals and accountability.
  • Deep knowledge of volleyball tactics, training methods, and competitive strategy.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Newton Country Day School and the Sacred Heart Network.
