Varsity B Boys’ Ice Hockey Head Coach/English Teacher

Cushing Academy seeks an experienced coach to lead the Varsity B Boys’ Ice Hockey program.  The Head Coach will work under the direction of the Varsity A Head Coach,  assisting in all aspects of the Varsity B program.


  • Evaluate student-athlete’s skills for team placement and continuous improvement for potential advancement to the Varsity A program.
  • Collaborate with assistant coaches, trainers, and other support staff to optimize player development and performance.
  • Serve as a mentor and role model for players, guiding them on and off the ice to cultivate their personal growth.
  • Uphold high standards of professionalism, integrity, and ethics in all interactions with players, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Attend all practices, games, and team events.

In Partnership with the Varsity A Coaching Staff:

Player Development

  • Develop comprehensive training programs to enhance players’ skills, physical conditioning, and tactical understanding of the game.
  • Provide individualized coaching and feedback to help players reach their full potential.
  • Foster a positive and supportive team culture that emphasizes growth, resilience, and sportsmanship.

Game Strategy and Preparation:

  • Develop and implement effective game plans tailored to each opponent’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Analyze game footage to identify areas for improvement and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Stay current with trends and advancements in ice hockey coaching, sports science, and training methodologies.
  • Adapt coaching techniques and strategies based on evolving trends, team dynamics, and individual player needs.
  • Ensure that players are mentally and physically prepared for each game through thorough scouting and practice sessions.

Leadership and Mentorship:

  • Serve as a mentor and role model for student-athletes, promoting values such as integrity, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Provide guidance and support to help players balance their academic, athletic, and personal responsibilities.
  • Cultivate a supportive and inclusive team environment that values diversity and respects individual differences.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of coaching experience at an independent school, college/university or equivalent competitive experience is required.
  • Strong knowledge of the rules, strategies, and techniques of ice hockey.
  • Must adhere to all NEPSAC rules and regulations.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire student-athletes to achieve both athletic and academic success.
  • Commitment to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate the demands of the sport and the academic calendar.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications must be maintained. A valid driver’s license and ability to meet the standards of Cushing Academy’s current Motor Vehicle Policy are required.

Significant experience with Men’s Ice Hockey, as a player at the college level or as a coach at the secondary level or above, is strongly preferred.   This is a 10-month position that includes on-campus housing. Residential duties will be assigned.

Success in this role will be measured by the overall growth and development of players, the team’s competitive performance, and the positive impact on the broader hockey community.

English Teacher

Cushing Academy seeks to hire an experienced and passionate teacher of English to begin August 19, 2024. Responsibilities include teaching four sections of high school English, assisting in athletics (or leading an afternoon activity) for two seasons, and serving as an advisor to a small group of students. Residential life duties are required, and housing is provided.  Successful candidates will have an exceptional ability to develop and maintain positive and healthy relationships with a diverse range of adolescents. Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing commitment to creating and supporting an inclusive educational environment and a willingness to examine their own educational practices through an anti-oppression and anti-racist framework.


  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of teaching experience at  the high school level.

Familiarity with independent schools is necessary, and boarding school experience is particularly helpful.
