Upper School Counselor

Thayer Academy’s Upper School seeks an Upper School Counselor to work closely with the Assistant Head for Student Engagement and Wellbeing, the Upper School Director, the Director of Counseling, the other Upper School Counselor, school nurses, advisors, teachers, and grade level deans in order to create a safe and supportive school environment for students and faculty.   The Upper School Counselor serves all students, not just those with mental health needs or those in crisis.  In addition to helping students manage common stressors, the Counselor is a resource in the community to support the adults who work with and care for Upper School students. 

When necessary, the Counselor may screen students for symptoms of more serious mental health concerns and help families find appropriate outside mental health providers. They can serve as a liaison between the school and provider and be an advocate for the student at school. 

In times of crisis, the Counselor coordinates with the school and community to bring together resources.  As the foundation of their work, the Counselor adheres to professional and ethical standards within the field.  

This full-time position includes advising a small group of students and participating in the life of the school with students through coaching and/or supervising student activities. This position is a salaried, full-time, regular, 10-month position.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Aside from what is mentioned above, the Upper School Counselor also:
    • Meets regularly with colleagues to support mental health and wellness-related needs on campus.  These colleagues and groups include: 
      • Upper School Deans 
      • Upper School Director
      • Assistant Head of School for Student Engagement and Wellbeing
      • Director of Counseling and counseling department 
      • Hale Learning Center team
    • Plans periodic Family Education Forums on topics of adolescent development (in conjunction with the Middle School Counselor, the other Upper School Counselor, and the Thayer Academy Parents Association);
    • Teaches the eleventh grade Decisions course;
    • Manages the US Advising Program in collaboration with other US Counselor and Deans
    • Collaborates with the school counseling department to build and implement school-wide mental health and wellness based initiatives
    • Helps plan student orientations with US Director and grade deans;
    • Serves as a resource to families who may have concerns about their child’s wellbeing.
    • Participates in professional growth opportunities


  • Advanced degree in social work, counseling, or clinical psychology
  • 3-5 years experience working with adolescents, their families, and faculty/staff in a school setting
  • Passion for working with adolescents
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in the classroom, in curriculum, and in relationships with members of the school community
  • High level of comfort and experience with technology in a educational setting
  • Willingness to work on a team in a collaborative department
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, their families, and colleagues
  • Excellent  communication and organizational skills
  • An appreciation of and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Approachability and trustworthiness
