Upper and Middle School Choral Director 

The Choral Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our choral program across both divisions. This position includes directing three choruses during the academic day (Upper School Chorus, Upper School Select Chorus, and Middle School Chorus) and advising in the upper school (0.75 FTE). There is the possibility of expanding the role by adding a community chorus at the Rivers School Conservatory, teaching private voice lessons, or taking on additional roles in the Rivers community. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of experience teaching choral ensembles, preferably at the middle and high school level. A bachelor’s degree in voice, choral music, or comparable experience is required; a master’s degree in voice or choral conducting is preferred.

Candidates must possess a commitment to professional development and personal growth as a musician and music teacher, as well as the ability and desire to collaborate effectively with colleagues to develop the department’s curriculum and pedagogy. A team-first attitude, a sincere care for student wellbeing, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to advancing the school’s DEI mission are also essential qualities for a successful Rivers teacher.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Support student musicians
    • Operate with a primary goal of knowing, mentoring, and inspiring students 
    • Enthusiastically guide students of all levels, from beginning to advanced singers
    • Provide constructive and supportive feedback in rehearsals, written comments, and assessments
    • Coach individual students in preparation for auditions at regional and wider festivals
    • Oversee ensemble placement
  • Foster an engaging and supportive rehearsal environment
    • Utilize knowledge of a wide range of choral repertoire and vocal technique
    • Create a space where students feel a sense of belonging and safety in which to take risks and grow
  • Plan and lead inspiring performances
    • Prepare students for confident performances of engaging and diverse repertoire in four major performances per year
    • Organize community performances on and off campus
  • Prepare and implement an engaging and rigorous curriculum
    • Create and maintain a curriculum that allows for the growth of students as well-rounded musicians
    • Develop clear criteria for assessment, feedback, and growth
  • Work with colleagues in supporting the wider school mission
    • Attend faculty meetings and professional development opportunities
    • Collaborate with colleagues within and across departments
    • Contribute enthusiastically to the musical life of the school beyond the classroom including occasional chaperoning at music festivals and educational trips outside of regular school hours
