Summer Youth Dance Resident Assistant (Summer 2022)

Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, MA seeks Summer Youth Dance Resident Assistants (SYD RAs) for the Summer Youth Dance 2022 session.

SYD RAs are the summer role models, leaders, and planners for our Summer Youth Dance students. SYD RAs help develop opportunities that complement the artistic programs, as well as plan and execute social and recreational events for summer students. SYD RAs are also critical in helping maintain safety and order within the dormitory. The ideal Summer SYD RA candidate demonstrates an understanding of both the mission of Walnut Hill School for the Arts and a desire to work in a summer arts community. Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of responsibility, experience in leadership, conflict resolution, teamwork, and working with diverse groups of individuals. Candidates should also demonstrate competency in written, oral, and interpersonal communication.

The roles and responsibilities of the Summer Youth Dance Resident Assistant include but are not limited to:

Administrative 

  • Understand and implement security procedures; respond to emergency and critical incidents involving residents related to health, safety, and security issues;
  • Participate and assist in each registration and program closure;
  • Communicate regularly, and as needed, with the Director of Summer Student Life and the Director of Auxiliary Programs regarding individual students, dorm-wide issues, etc.;
  • Report maintenance needs and repairs in the building to the Director of Summer Student Life;
  • Attend all summer staff obligations, including registrations, meetings, and student performances;
  • Demonstrate appropriate and responsible behavior at all times, both inside and outside the assigned hall;
  • Abide by School policies; confront, enforce, and report violations of policies and inappropriate behavior; assist campus officials or other responsible parties elsewhere on campus when requested to do so;
  • Complete all administrative paperwork as required; follow all health and safety policies and procedures as directed by School Administration;
  • Conduct check-in and check-out as students are moving in and out of their rooms with each program; and
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

 

Student-oriented 

  • Establish and maintain behavioral expectations and community standards in accordance with Walnut Hill’s Summer Program Handbook;
  • Plan and implement social and community building activities on a nightly basis;
  • Chaperone weekly field trips throughout Boston and New England area;
  • Be vigilant and ensure the safety of all students while they are under the jurisdiction of Walnut Hill’s Summer Programs;
  • Develop a sense of community and a respectful environment for students living in the residence hall;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with residents by being available and approachable;
  • Foster communication and community among residents, fellow staff members, and campus personnel;
  • Address individual student needs and concerns in a timely manner;
  • Mediate conflicts that may occur between roommates and among residents; and
  • Maintain a positive attitude and support for Residential Life and Walnut Hill.

 

Length of Assignment:  

The 2022 Summer Youth Dance Program dates are July 10 – July 23, with SYD RA training schedule TBD. SYD RAs work in teams to provide supervision in the residence halls and throughout campus. SYD RAs are on-duty evenings from 4:00 PM – 8:00 AM and all weekends. SYD RAs are off every weekday from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Full duty schedule to be available by June 15, 2022. Room and board is provided throughout employment.

Health & Safety Protocols: 

All employees and community members are required to follow the School’s policies and procedures including wearing masks, maintaining appropriate physical distance, participating in weekly COVID-19 testing if required, providing proof of vaccination, and other protocols as directed by School Administration. All health and safety protocols and policies are subject to change based on state, local, and CDC guidelines and at the discretion of School Administration.

Physical Demands:

Physical demands include dexterity for tool, equipment, and office machine and supply operation including but not limited to writing, typing, using electronic devices, computer, phone, calculator, copy/fax machine, and printers. Stooping, bending, traveling to/from locations on campus, ascending/descending stairs, reaching, and sitting or standing for extended periods of time are common.
