The Advent School: Summer Program Teacher
The Advent School, located in the Beacon Hill section of Boston, Massachusetts, serves 200 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. A mission-focused school founded in the principles of social justice, Advent has served the students and families of Boston since 1961. Through its Reggio Emilia-inspired curriculum, Advent’s faculty deliver authentic, rigorous, and experiential learning opportunities that encourage students to “learn with passion, act with courage, and change the world.”
The Enrichment Department comprises six robust programs. The After-School program serves approximately 100 students in pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade per day. Around 50 classes are offered weekly, ranging from robotics to sailing and a private music and language program. This department also hosts the Design at Advent summer program, school vacation week programs, ADVENTures days, Makerspace Saturdays, and child care for some school events.
The Advent School seeks a committed, experienced, and passionate individual to serve as a summer program teacher. The ideal candidate for this role will:
- Be skilled and passionate about teaching students ranging in age from our years through twelve years
- Have experience and/or background in STEAM education
- Be a creative and out-of-the-box thinker
This is a part-time, contracted position for summer 2023. The pay range is $20 to $25 per hour, depending on experience. The hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

- 7/10-7/21: Biomimicry in Boston
- 7/24-8/4: Woodwork Wonders
Responsibilities & Duties
- Co-design a two-week engineering and design based Reggio inspired curriculum
- Implement curricula for an 8-hour day / 2-week session between June 20 through August 4, with an emphasis on guiding students through the design process.
- Inspire students to tinker, ideate, create, fail, and try again through provocations and design challenges
- Create an engaging learning environment for a group of students ranging in age from four years through twelve years that promotes positive social interactions, problem-solving skills, and collaboration.
- Oversee the safety and well-being of students in a variety of settings (classroom, playground, and field trips)
- Track and report attendance daily
- Communicate with the administrative team regarding student behavior and/or participation
Required Skills & Characteristics
- Ability to plan and co-teach a STEAM-based curriculum
- Be punctual, reliable, and have excellent communication skills
- Flexibility! Every lesson plan is a starting place and is subject to change
- Experience working with children aged four to 12. Please specify your preferred age group in your cover letter.
- Experience with – or a desire to teach in – a setting that honors the independence of children
- Additional experience with project-based curriculum design, fine arts, and/or applied arts is welcomed
- At least one year of experience working with elementary-aged children
- The ideal candidate will commit their time and skills for the period listed and have strong group management and relationship-building skills.
- Knowledge of students’ social, emotional, and developmental needs
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree are strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism at all times with children, parents, colleagues, and community partners
- Enthusiastic, well-organized, thorough, and highly reliable
- Willingness to undergo a background check and be fingerprinted
