Summer Camp Specialty Programs Counselor

Belmont Day Summer Programs offer a variety of summer camp experiences for children age 3-15. We are looking for instructors and counselors to work in our specialty camp programs. Each program has a Specialty Camp Instructor who is the lead for the program. We are looking for support staff with experience working in the topic areas that are excited to share these subjects with our campers. In 2025, we are offering the following specialty camps:

Create & Calculate
Namaste, Nature, and Creativity
Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet intended outcomes.
- Work alongside the Specialty Camp Instructor to deliver a camp program that focuses on social emotional learning and accomplishing the stated learning goals.
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
- Assures campers are properly supervised at all times.
- Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
Participate in the implementation of activities for campers within the program area as well as overall campmission and outcomes.
- Responsible for assisting with the teaching of activities.
- Learn the basics to assist campers in their explorations.
- Help campers through challenges at a developmentally appropriate level.
Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
- Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
- Be alert to campers needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems as appropriate.
Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
- Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
- Set a good example to campers, younger staff, and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
- Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
- Represent Belmont Day School when interacting with parents or committee members.
Other Job Duties:
- Attend staff training sessions, including weekly staff meetings
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise opening and closing programs, special events, overnight, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
- Assist in the implementation of any special events.
- Other tasks or duties as assigned by the camp director.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
- Must be 18 years of age and be one year beyond high school graduation
- Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
- Ability to interact with all age levels.
- (preferred) experience in specific camp program area
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of the developmental needs of youth.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program areas.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill level) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures. And apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency i.e. fire, evacuation, illness, or injury.
- Ability to or evidence of endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stopping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
- Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to work in a camp setting with limited or simple equipment and facilities, and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs.
