The Fessenden School, in West Newton, MA, is an all-boys independent day and boarding school serving 525 students from Pre-K to Grade 9. The Fessenden School, an all boys independent day/boarding school in West Newton, MA., seeks Substitute teachers for our Lower, Middle and Upper School (Grades Pre-K to 9). We are interested in both short and long-term substitute teachers who have had experience in the classroom understanding how to manage a classroom and to teach from lesson plans in order to provide continuity of instruction for the students. Substitute teachers play an important role as the expectation is active and engaged teaching in a setting where students will continue to learn in the absence of their teacher. Compensation is based on the length of the subbing assignment.
FOR SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS:
- Teach classes following lesson plan
- Assist and supervise classrooms if the primary teacher is remote
- Perform duties such as supervising drop-off and dismissal, recess, and lunch
- Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and students
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
- Exemplify the School’s mission and community principles, including the core values of honesty, respect and compassion
- Perform duties as assigned by the division head
FOR LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS ONLY:
- Assume teaching responsibilities including but not limited to lesson planning, assessment, grading and reporting
- Stay current with curriculum and 21st century learning
- Incorporate project based learning, educational technology, differentiated learning, and cultural competency in lessons
- Perform duties such as being a homeroom teacher and/or advisor, grade team member, and student club facilitator; leading/assisting with fall orientation, day grade trips, overnight grade trips, and events
- Attend professional development meetings
Maintain current CPR/AED and first aid certification and child abuse prevention training
- Bachelor degree
- Experience in instructing children in an academic, athletic, or camp programs
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage a classroom
- Ability to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization, and problem solving with minimal supervision
- Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents
Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships

Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment, and the noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
