Thornton Academy Upper School Special Education Teacher-Bridges Program

Nature of the Position:

The special education teacher is responsible for developing programming for students primarily identified with Emotional Disturbance, Other Health Impairment, and Autism. A strong knowledge of mental health needs and positive behavioral supports is preferred . The chosen candidate will work collaboratively with other special education teachers, educational technicians, a special education social worker and community providers in developing students’ academic and functional, skills within the self-contained and mainstream classroom environments, as well as in the community setting.

Performance Responsibilities:

Tasks for this position include but are not limited to:

-Planning and preparing appropriate lessons and activities aligned with IEP goals and objectives and in support of student transition goals

-Consultation with mainstream teachers to support inclusion in the broader school community

-Completing necessary special education paperwork and assessments within the specified timelines

-Regular communication with parents and colleagues to support student progress

-Implementing behavior management strategies that foster a classroom climate conducive to learning and engagement, including development of individualized PBSPs.

-Collecting and using data to measure student progress and inform programming needs -Directing daily activities of support staff

Qualifications:

Valid Maine Certification 282 or 286
Experience working in special education at the secondary level preferred
