Brimmer and May School, an all-gender independent school in Chestnut Hill, MA seeks a highly skilled and passionate Sous Chef to join our dynamic culinary team at The Brimmer and May School. The Sous Chef will assist the Director of Food Services in overseeing kitchen operations, ensuring high-quality food production, and maintaining a clean and efficient kitchen environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong culinary background, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to culinary excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in Menu Planning and Development: Collaborate with the Director of Food Services to create innovative and seasonal menus that meet our high standards of quality and presentation.
  • Oversee Food Preparation: Ensure that all food is prepared to the highest standards of quality and consistency, of high nutritional quality and attractively presented.
  • Allergy Control and Food Safety:  Enforce and maintain strict protocols for handling allergens. Ensure staff are trained on allergy awareness, cross-contamination prevention, and proper food labeling
  • Inventory and Ordering: Monitor inventory levels, conduct regular stock checks, and manage ordering of supplies and ingredients to ensure efficient kitchen operations.
  • Quality Control: Maintain rigorous quality control to ensure dishes meet the School’s standards before they reach the customer.
  • Training and Development: Train, mentor, and develop kitchen staff to improve their skills and performance. Foster a positive and productive work environment.
  • Ensure Cleanliness and Hygiene: Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen and dining environment. Enforce strict adherence to health and safety standards.
  • Cost Management: Assist in managing food costs and waste, implementing strategies to optimize profitability while maintaining quality.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Culinary degree or equivalent experience in a professional kitchen.
  • Experience: Minimum of [5] years of experience in a similar role, volume or batch cooking experience a plus
  • Skills:
    • Strong culinary skills with a deep understanding of various cooking techniques and cuisines.
    • Excellent leadership and time management abilities.
    • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
    • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
    • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Certifications: Food Handler’s Certification or equivalent.
